CUBE café bar to play host to an exclusive food and fiction event this October

The CUBE café|bar in Derby is offering booklovers an opportunity to sample their new autumn menu for only five pounds whilst discussing a selection of literary delights on Thursday 27 October from 7.30pm.
The ‘Book Club Feast for a Fiver’ is designed to celebrate the success of the CUBE café|bar’s book club, which has been running for almost four years, and to encourage new attendees to join.

Innovative Project In Line For Heritage Awards

An innovative creative project, which celebrated the life and times of acclaimed artist Joseph Wright, has been shortlisted for a Derbyshire Heritage Award.

‘The Enlightenment Comes Alive’ was created by Déda Producing – the outdoor events arm of Déda, the creative centre for Dance, Contemporary Circus and Outdoor Work in Chapel Street – in partnership with QUAD and artist and digital projection specialist Barret Hodgson as part of The Grand Tour 2015.

Learners’ Work To Be Exhibited at DH Lawrence Museum

Work created by mature learners at Derby College’s Ilkeston campus is due to be exhibited at the DH Lawrence Birthplace museum in Eastwood.

Learners on the Access to Teaching and Access to Social Sciences programmes, which are pathways for adult learners to progress onto Higher Education and a wide range of careers, visited the museum recently to gain inspiration for a creative writing project.

Rail Minister welcomes new Employment and Skills Academy

Rail Minister Paul Maynard MP has welcomed the launch of a new Rail Employment and Skills Academy in the East Midlands. The new Rail Employment and Skills Academy brings together Derby College, one of the UK’s largest further education colleges, and the Rail Forum East Midlands, which represents over 150 rail related businesses across the East Midlands.

Broomfield Hall Plant Fest

Derby College’s Broomfield Hall campus in Morley will be open to the public on Sunday September 25 where Horticulture students and lecturers will share their knowledge of how to grow a wide range of plants.

The Plant Fest between 10am and 4pm is the latest in a series of events throughout the year focusing on different aspects of gardening skills.

Festival Focus in Derby Cathedral Quarter

Street bunting will be erected across the Cathedral Quarter this week in preparation for a month of festivals and events planned for the area which have been supported by the Business Improvement District (BID).

Colourful flags will adorn the Cornmarket and Irongate – two key streets in the Cathedral Quarter – and will stay throughout September to add to the festival atmosphere in the area. The bunting has been funded by the Cathedral Quarter BID, Derby Feste and Derby Folk Festival.

Peaty Performance Prompts Local Pools to Recruit More Staff

A surge of interest in swimming thanks to Adam Peaty’s success in Rio and the continued lack of pool space in Derby has prompted Lonsdale Swimming & Sports Trust to step up its recruitment of more swimming teachers and lifeguards.

The charitable Trust oversees Gayton Pool in Littleover on behalf of Derby City Council and also Lonsdale Pool in Mickleover, which it is currently hoping to replace with a new £4 million facility as soon as another local 1.5 acre site can be secured.

Show Success for Broomfield Hall

A pair of Derbyshire Gritstone ewe lambs, reared by Agricultural staff and students at Broomfield Hall won their category in this summer's Hope Show. The show is one of the only in the UK to have specific categories for this breed of sheep and the competition was very strong amongst farmers in the region.

Derby Folk Festival

The 10th Derby Folk Festival returns to the City Marquee on the Market Place, the Guildhall Theatre, The Old Bell Hotel and Derby Cathedral. As well as ticketed concerts and events, there will be dance displays
throughout the streets, and free music performances during Saturday and Sunday.

The festival is a who's who of folk including: Fairport Convention, The Demon Barbers, The Young'uns, Heidi Talbot, 9Bach, John McCusker, Sally Barker, Belshazzar's Feast, Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker and many more.
