Derbyshire Dales leisure centres seek four more sporty apprentices

Personal trainer Jess Guest is the latest young person to land her ideal job thanks to a sports and leisure apprenticeship with Derbyshire Dales District Council.

Jess, who is 18 and from Morton,  now works  full-time at Arc Leisure in Matlock after studying via Derby College while gaining valuable on-site work experience.  

Bongo Fury at Derby Cathedral

Internationally renowned musicians O Duo will bring their unique and energetic percussion performance to Derby Cathedral for the first time on Friday February 10 as part of the Twilights concert series.

Musicians Oliver Cox and Owen Gunnell will perform a special one-hour concert starting at 6pm entitled ‘Bongo Fury’.

Local Artist Launches Year-Long Exhibition at Déda

A local artist, who has spent the past three years creating three pieces of artwork a day using recycled and reused materials, has launched the first of a series of exhibitions at regional dance house Déda in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter.

Del Coombs (70), is a University of Derby graduate where he has also worked for 20 years as a cleaner. and collects most of the materials used in his creations during his early morning shifts.

He will be staging 13 different four-week exhibitions at Déda over the coming year.

Cyclists Gear Up For Sportive Challenge

Entries are now open for Derby’s Spring Classic Sportive event which has been confirmed for Sunday April 23, 2017.

Cyclists of all ages and abilities have the choice of three distances – 40k, 60k and 120k – starting and finishing at Markeaton Park with routes around South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire.

Early bird entrants will qualify for a discount if they sign up by December 31 with further discounts available for those who also sign up for the North Derbyshire Cycle Sportive on September 17, 2017.

The Sportive is being organised by Cycle Derby and HUUB Events

Local Lady Wins Prize Draw Bonus

A Derbyshire pensioner has won £300 of vouchers to spend in shops in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter after entering a prize draw.

The Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID), which was recently crowned the best city centre in the country at the Great British High Street awards, produced a leaflet showcasing the variety of entertainment and events taking place in the area and invited people to enter a prize draw for vouchers to spend in shops of their choice.

Derby College Students Shadow Derby Theatre Professionals

Performing Arts students at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre have gained a unique insight into the production process behind Derby Theatre’s successful Christmas show ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

The students, who have their sights set on a wide range of careers in the creative industries, have been shadowing the team including directors, costume and lighting designers, technical stage team and actors throughout the preparation of the production.

The project culminated in the students creating and presenting their own adapted scenes at Derby Theatre.

Derby Cathedral Quarter Clinches Coveted Great British High Street Title

Derby Cathedral Quarter has been named the city location winner of the prestigious Great British High Street Awards 2016.

Having consistently been in the lead in the public online vote and having hosted a judges’ visit last month, the Cathedral Quarter beat off stiff competition from Broadmead in Bristol and the Castle Arcade district of Norwich to clinch the coveted title.
