Sponsorship Secured For Growing Club

Construction plant and vehicle specialists Leedale, which is based in Alfreton, have pledged support for young footballers at Hatton United Junior FC.

Despite being founded just five years ago, Hatton United is already one of the largest grassroots junior football clubs in the Derbyshire and Burton league with 17 boys and girls teams across all age groups.

Join BeatFeet Drumming & Dance Workshops for their Derbyshire-based community wellbeing project 'Djembe Fever'. Children, families and adults can attend drumming and dance workshops for free in various locations across the city and surrounding areas. 

BeatFeet is kicking off their project with a series of West African dance workshops, aimed at beginners and also more experienced dancers. Gambian renowned choreographer and teacher, Jokeh Sillah, will be sharing the joy of West African dance, with live djembe drumming to accompany the dance steps.

Sinfonia Viva Expands Outreach Work Thanks to Children in Need

Sinfonia Viva – the Derby-based professional orchestra of the East Midlands – has been awarded further funding by BBC Children in Need to expand its creative work with children and young people who have long-term illnesses or special educational needs.

The three-year project, supported by £119,265 Children in Need funding, will start this Autumn and involve hundreds of young people across the East Midlands. 

Classical Treat In Store For Cathedral Concert Goers

Having launched the Autumn season with another outstanding performance in front of a 20,000-strong audience at Darley Park on September 1, award winning Sinfonia Viva will return to the city on Wednesday October 23 for an evening performance at Derby Cathedral.

Under the baton of Principal Conductor Frank Zielhorst, the programme starts with one of Mozart’s most quintessential and famous works Symphony No.40. This iconic piece was composed in 1788 and continues to feature heavily in film and television scores to this day.

Derbys Finest Supports Women’s Professional Development

Derbys Finest - a group which aims to inspire, celebrate and support women across the county - is planning an event as part of its commitment to support female leaders of the future.

The group will hold its first professional development session at the University of Derby Law School in Agard Street on Monday October 28.

Open to women from all industry and community sectors, the three-hour event will include sessions on leadership and mentoring as well as opportunities to network with fellow attendees.

DANCING FOR HEALTH - NORTH DERBYSHIRE – starts 18 September

Dancing for Health are pleased to announce the introduction of a series of partner dance classes aimed at those living in outreach and rural communities in North Derbyshire. CEO, Tracey Barnes will be piloting the twelve week course and intends to offer places primarily to individuals residing in the Loundsley Green and Holme Hall area. The partner dance classes will be provided at a reduced cost of £3 and are suitable for people of all ages and abilities

Made In Derby Stars to be unveiled

Ten new 'Made in Derby' plaques celebrating the achievements of some of the people who have helped put Derby and Derbyshire on the world map will be unveiled in the city's Market Place and on Iron Gate on Saturday 14th September.

This is phase 2 of 'Made in Derby' - a trail of mosaic and cast iron plaques which can be brought to life via augmented reality using a smartphone app - with a Walk of Fame already embedded on Albion Street and Exchange Street.

Popular Derbyshire farm shop Croots has been awarded two new Great Taste Awards to add to the impressive selection of accolades collected over the past 11 years.

Great Taste Awards are regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the fine food world – and Croots Farm Shop has now won at least 25.

The latest Great Taste Awards were awarded to Croots Bakewell Tart and Croots Shire Ale, which each received a One Star Great Taste Award - meaning the judges dubbed them as products that deliver fantastic flavour.

Spice World Movie Night at Iconic Roundhouse

Following the huge success of its inaugural events, The Roundhouse Events team based at the historic Roundhouse, Pride Park, are celebrating the reunion of British girl band the Spice Girls with a showing of Spice World the movie.

The beautiful Roundhouse will be turned into an indoor cinema on Saturday 19 October for a one-off showing of ‘Spice World’.

Leader Succession at Sinfonia Viva

Celebrated violinist Benedict Holland has retired after 17 years as Leader of Grammy-nominated Sinfonia Viva - the East Midlands’ professional orchestra.

Mr Holland now plans to pursue other professional opportunities and has been succeeded in the role by award-winning violinist Sophie Rosa.

He said: “I am sad to be leaving behind a wonderful team of musicians and colleagues at Sinfonia Viva but looking forward to having the time to develop other aspects of my performing and teaching career.

Derby Festé Promises a Feast of Street Entertainment

Derby city centre – Saturday 28 September 2019

Derby city centre will take on a Covent Garden-style atmosphere again this September with a packed day of family-friendly street entertainment.

Derby Festé, which will return to the city on Friday September 27 and Saturday September 28, attracts more than 30,000 visitors to the city centre over the two-day festival which features performers from across Europe in a celebration of street entertainment including dance, contemporary circus, music and comedy.

CQ Cinema Presents…

Four family films will be shown on a giant screen in Derby’s Market Place free of charge this Autumn thanks to a partnership between Derby Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) and QUAD, supported by Derby City Council.

CQ Cinema Presents.. will show four different films on Wednesday’s during September and October with all screenings free to attend.

Sinfonia Viva celebrates inclusive creative project

Pupils from special education needs (SEND) schools across Derby recently shared the stage with professional musicians from Sinfonia Viva for an interactive concert showcasing their creative work as part of a city-wide initiative.

‘Lean on Me’ at the Riverside Centre in Pride Park was the culmination of inclusive creative workshops in schools run by Sinfonia Viva, the Derby-based professional orchestra of the East Midlands, QUAD and inclusive theatre company Hubbub.

GT Says Farewell to Transport Manager Mark After Five Years

Last week we said a sad farewell to Mark Jones (left), who has held the role of GT Couriers Transport Manager for the last five years. The lucky man is moving on to a life full of nonstop golf, wine and DIY! Stepping up to the plate and taking over Mark’s role is Ray Elliot (right), who’s been learning the ropes in the GT operations office since May 2018. Good luck to both Mark and Ray as they embark on a new chapter in their lives!

Top Grade Achievements at Derby College Group

The largest cohort of A level students for several years collected examination results at Derby College Group’s Joseph Wright Centre today (Thursday August 15).

Just over 733 students sat A level examinations at DCG’s post-16 Academic and Arts college in the city this summer.

Adult GCSE Success at Derby College

Mother-of-one, Lauren Burns (24), from Ilkeston, one of the many mature students who sat GCSE examinations at Derby College Group (DCG) this summer, is celebrating a Grade 7 (equivalent to an A grade) in English.

Lauren now plans to return to College to do GCSE Maths and also an Access to Higher Education in Humanities and Social Science study programme at the college.

Derby Book Festival has announced today (29 August) the appointment of Vicky Dawson as their new Festival Director.  She will join the team from 1 September on a part-time basis, continuing in her current role at Buxton International Festival where she is Book Festival Director.

Autumn is set to be a fabulous season of entertainment at Derby Arena.  Professor Brian Cox OBE kicks off the season when he returns with his Universal World Tour following his previous sell-out fixture in Derby earlier this year. Fans of Tina Turner will be wowed with the spectacular  “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” tribute show and the superb talents of Michael Jackson will be showcased  at the “Michael Starring Ben – the Magic of Michael Jackson” show.
