A surge of interest in swimming thanks to Adam Peaty’s success in Rio and the continued lack of pool space in Derby has prompted Lonsdale Swimming & Sports Trust to step up its recruitment of more swimming teachers and lifeguards.

The charitable Trust oversees Gayton Pool in Littleover on behalf of Derby City Council and also Lonsdale Pool in Mickleover, which it is currently hoping to replace with a new £4 million facility as soon as another local 1.5 acre site can be secured.

Later this month singer Dave Berry, whose hits include 'The Crying Game' will hit the hills of the Peak District to raise funds for local charity Accessible Derbyshire.

Dave, along with friends Jeff Troops and Chris Hermon, are walking the 'Golden Miles': a picturesque, way-marked route through 20 Peak District villages which was created by Accessible Derbyshire's very own Gillian Scotford!

Staff at Derby and Ashbourne independent funeral directors G Wathall & Son have raised £554 for a wide range of charities at a number of summer events.

The family-owned firm attended several community events including those in Etwall, Chellaston, Oakwood, Little Eaton and Chaddesden to promote its funeral, pre-payment plans and bereavement support services.

Health and social care watchdog Healthwatch Derbyshire has celebrated various organisations’ pledges that were made to improve the lives of the county’s 1,600 young people who are carers for a family member at home.

A 12 month partnership project to raise greater awareness of the plight of young carers in Derbyshire recently culminated in an event held at County Hall in Matlock where the pledges to improve the lives of young carers were marked with an awards ceremony.

Buxton Film is pleased and excited to announce that it is being funded by Film Hub North West Central to run a project to engage young people in the programming and marketing of films.

The project runs until March 2017 and will see a minimum of 10 films being selected for screening at the Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton, by groups of young programmers drawn from across the High Peak. There is no commercial cinema in the borough though a number of community cinemas screen a wide-range of films in halls in towns and villages.

Derby College Dog Grooming apprentice Jessica Peggs (21) has scooped a top award in her first national competition.

Jessica, from Eastwood, is a former Derby College student and is now completing a level three apprenticeship at the College’s dog grooming salon at Broomfield Hall in Morley.

She entered Premier Groom at Stoneleigh, which also went towards the practical element of her International Certified Master Grooming qualification, and came away with first prize in the intermediate class.

A former Derby College Motor Vehicle apprentice has delivered a keynote speech at an international conference – highlighting the initiatives needed to encourage more women and girls into the industry.
