Join the virtual Matlock Storytelling Cafe, every first Friday of the month

A night of Storytelling for grown ups. The Matlock Storytelling Cafe event brings people together once a month on the first Friday to share stories and tellers from near and far.

In normal circumstances, the event takes place every first Friday at the Imperial Rooms in Matlock, but due to the pandemic, the storytelling cafe has moved online and so that you can zoom the session to your front room!

Derby BIDs Present Ram Trail Prize Draw Vouchers

Derby’s Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BID) have announced the winners of a prize draw organised as part of their involvement with this summer’s Derby Ram Trail.

The BIDs offered two winners the chance to win £100 each in vouchers to spend in their favourite city centre shops. Anyone who had spent £5 or more in a Cathedral Quarter or St Peters Quarter business was invited to enter the prize draw.

The Big BIF Weekend: Final line-up is revealed

Buxton International Festival is delighted to announce the final line-up for The Big BIF Weekend (15-16 October), a mini version of its celebrated summer festival with a worldclass roster of books, classical music and jazz.

The Ashover Light Railway Vol2 poetry book by David Siddon

David Siddon, along with watercolour illustrator Eric Leslie, releases his latest poetry book The Ashover Light Railway 1924-1950, volume 2.

Volume 2 of a Book of Poems includes an introduction by David Siddon with another 18 poems and supporting photographs from Bob Gratton's collection and a magnificent collection of watercolours and drawings from the late talented railway artist Eric Leslie.

Derby Folk Festival returns with fringe benefits

The long-awaited and virtually sold out Derby Folk Festival returns as a live event in the heart of the city centre this weekend, from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd October.

Now in its 15th year, noted artists including O’Hooley and Tidow, Kitty Macfarlane, Ninebarrow, India Electric Co. and Home Service will be joined by some old friends and new faces.

Buxton Museum: Want to learn a new craft?

Our Buxton Museum and Art Gallery has a new workshop programme for adults.

This autumn, treat yourself and learn a new craft. The museum is running a choice of adult workshops (for over 14s) at the museum and nearby studios, with experienced artists and only a few participants. These all-day events, 10am-4pm, will suit beginners and experienced people.

Derby BIDs ensure city centre businesses can join crime-fighting partnership

Derby’s Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) have joined forces with Derbyshire Business Crime Reduction Partnership (DBCRP) to make it easier for businesses to work together to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

Businesses in the BID areas will have free access to the DISC system, which is run by East Midlands Chamber, from October 1st 2021 when the scheme goes live.

Appeal in memory of Croots Farm Shop owner raises more than £7,000

More than £7,000 has been raised in memory of popular farm shop owner Steve Croot, who ran Croots Farm Shop near Duffield in Derbyshire with his wife Kay.

Steve died suddenly on 15th August, and his family launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise money to buy two defibrillators.

The appeal very quickly exceeded its target – allowing for a generous donation to also be made to Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, which Steve had supported for many years, and the local St Alkmund’s Church in Duffield.

Markham Mining Memorial Unveiling September 2021: Five more figures added to Walking Together

Beam are delighted to be able to share with you the news that five new statues have been added to the ‘Walking Together’ mining memorial by Artist Stephen Broadbent at Derbyshire County Council’s Markham Vale Business Park.

The new statues take the total of life-sized steel figures at the site to 93, and Beam are continuing to work alongside partners to fundraise to see the target of all 106 figures installed.

The most recent additions are sited at the Markham Vale Environment Centre and are dedicated to:

Museum of Making official opening to take place amongst weekend of city-wide celebrations and special events

On Friday 24 September the Museum of Making is holding its official opening ceremony led by the Duke of Devonshire, Patron of Derby Museums, who has been a great supporter of the Museum of Making throughout its development. Derby Silk Mill – widely regarded as the site of the world’s first modern factory – opened as the new Museum of Making in May, and since then has been going from strength to strength. 

Come and celebrate Eyam Village Bonfire and Firework Display 2021

Join the celebrations at the Eyam Village Bonfire and Firework Display on Saturday 6th November 2021, with entertainment starting in the village square from 5.30pm.

The torch-lit, music-led procession of the infamous ‘Willow RAT’ leaves at 6.15pm and is carried through the village to the chants of ‘Burn the Rat’ up to the playing fields. The RAT is laid on the spectacular bonfire which is then followed by our fabulous firework display.

Chapel Arts annual short story competition goes National!

This year, Chapel Arts seventh annual short story competition is open to everyone resident in the UK.

Winners in each of three age categories will receive prizes as follows:

  • Year groups 3-6: £50 / Runner-up: £25
  • Year groups 7-11: £75 / Runner-up: £25
  • Adult (year group 11+) first place: £100
  • Adult (year group 11+) second place: £50
  • Adult (year group 11+) third place: £25

This year's title is Isolation.

Derby Ram Trail Auction raises over £300,000!

Thirty colourful large ram sculptures from the popular Derby Ram trail went under the hammer last Thursday night at the Museum of Making. The trail has raised over £150,000 and this will be matched by The National Lottery Heritage Fund contribute over £300,000 for Derby Museums’ Endowment.

Loughborough poets publish lockdown-inspired zine

A group of Loughborough-based women who wrote poems to help them get through the lockdowns have published a zine of their work. Songbirds and Sirens, a collection of 11 poems, will be launched at a free event at All Saints Parish Church, Loughborough on Saturday 25th September, 4pm-7pm.

A software development ‘boot camp’ run by Derby College Group (DCG) is helping people from different backgrounds change their career direction.

The 12-week online course teaches software development principles and practice as well as skills designed to help attendees find a job in the rapidly growing sector. Among the students recently offered a new role  in software development on completing the course, is  30-year-old Andrew Widdowson who previously worked in food retail.

Giant Mural Set To Bring Chapel Street To Life

Déda, which is Derby’s nationally-renowned centre for dance, movement and creativity, is set to unveil a giant street mural on its building in the Cathedral Quarter.

Following a community consultation, Déda has commissioned Zoë Power, a Bristol-based artist and illustrator to create the colourful 6m by 8m mural in Chapel Street.

Extra council funds for local groups

Are you in a community group? Your local councillor has extra funding available this year to help groups in their area.

Each county councillor usually has £3,860, as part of our Community Leadership Scheme, to give to local groups. But this year an additional £3,860 has been allocated bringing their total to £7,720. And next year councillors will receive £3,860, plus a £1,500 Platinum Fund to give to local groups organising activities to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Even I can't quite believe we've done so many. But hasn't it been lovely to get out and about again, after the year we've just had?

Tickets for An Evening with Pam Ayres go on sale today (Friday 3 September) at Derby Theatre as part of Derby Book Festival’s Autumn Edition.   Pam Ayres will be presenting her latest anthology of poems, Pam Ayres on Animals, at a special event on Tuesday 9th November.
 
 The Festival’s Autumn Edition will also include ten events from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th November to be hosted at QUAD Derby. Tickets for these ten events will go on sale on Monday 20 September both online and from QUAD.

The next World Cheese Awards will be held in Oviedo, Spain, as part of the Asturias Paraíso Natural Internacional Cheese Festival from the 3rd – 6th November 2021.

Originally due to take place in 2020, the event has been rescheduled to ensure that the event takes place in the truly international spirit that it has engendered for over 30 years.

The renowned viola player Graham Oppenheimer brings a group of friends to perform string quintets by Mozart and Dvorak and will be joined by local young musician and soprano, Grace Crocker for songs by Schubert.

They will be playing at Melbourne Parish Church, DE73 8JH, on Thursday 23rd September Doors open 7.00 pm, concert begins 7.30 pm.

About the Open

Tarpey Gallery Open 2021 takes over from the Midlands Open which ran from 2009 – 2017 and will be a more streamlined affair with online applications, a four week duration and a more minimal hang. Entries will be open to all artists working in the UK. Any medium will be accepted. Entries are open from the 25th August – 25th September 2021 and the exhibition will take place from 23rd Oct – 14th November 2021.
