Motor Finance Company Plans Expansion Through Derby College Partnership

A leading motor finance company has teamed up with Derby College to launch an Employer Academy that will support its expansion plans.

First Response Finance, based in Chilwell, Nottingham, is currently recruiting up to 15 A level and Business Studies students from Derby College onto the programme with a view to recruiting some of them onto Degree Apprenticeships after they have finished their course.

Croots Farm Shop creates hanging Christmas tree forest in Derbyshire

Derbyshire farm shop Croots has come up with a novel way to display its Christmas trees – a hanging forest in one of the farm’s barns.

The set-up means that customers can walk amongst the firs, as they hang from the ceiling of the barn, and see exactly how the tree will look when it finds its place in the home.

“Everyone has their own idea of what makes the perfect tree for their home,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop off Wirksworth Road, Duffield, with wife Kay.

Wathalls Collect Lifeline Gifts For Children Worldwide

Derby and Ashbourne family-owned funeral directors G.Wathall & Son Ltd have collected more than 650 shoeboxes of Christmas gifts, hygiene and school supplies which are now being shipped around the world to children in need.

The funeral directors have been involved with Operation Christmas Child run by charity Samaritan’s Purse for the past five years – collecting and storing shoeboxes at its offices in Macklin Street, Derby, and Union Street, Ashbourne, and then delivering to the charity’s local warehouse.

A couple of years ago, the snow stayed for a while. One day I happened to look out of our bedroom window, down the hill, and there was a very thin fox, standing very still.  It struck me as a very beautiful, almost haunting moment that I'd been allowed to experience - so I wrote about it. - Jenny King

Bumper Fringe Boosts Local Economy

With Buxton Fringe 2016 opening for entries on December 1, this year’s audience and entrants’ surveys estimate that 2015’s event contributed a total of nearly half a million pounds to the local economy.

The biggest Buxton Fringe to date with 174 entries resulted in some £58,000 being spent by performers during their stay in Buxton. Meanwhile estimates show that audiences spent a total of £401,000 on food, accommodation and ticket sales for shows from local performers.

Derby City Council Pledges Further Support For Business Growth

Derby City Council has announced that a further £12.5 million will be available in 2016 to support business innovation and growth under the Derby Enterprise Growth Fund (DEGF).

The £20 million DEGF,  supported by the Regional Growth Fund, has already been administered to businesses in Derby and the surrounding area through grants and loans.

With around 65% allocated in loans, there will be £12.5 million due to be repaid to the Council available next year to support more business’ innovation, expansion and job creation plans.

New Employer Academy Launches With Community Appeal

The latest Employer Academy to launch at Derby College aims to provide young people with the multi skills they will need in the changing construction industry.

MBS, a Derby-based construction company which employs 30 plus staff across all the construction trades, has teamed up with the College to launch the MBS Construction Skills Academy.

One of the first projects that the students will be involved in is the MBS’ annual Christmas community project  – offering a deserving individual or family the chance to get a project completed in their home free of charge.
