Matlock Storytelling Cafe presents: Tales from the Hud Hud, told by Jumana Moon

On Fri 2nd of December 2022 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM GMT

At the Imperial Rooms, Imperial Road, Matlock, DE43NL

The hud hud or hoopoe, with its bright crest, striking colours, graceful flight and beautiful voice is named in the Quran as the bringer of stories to King Suleiman. The hud hud remains a much loved symbol of the power of the spoken word. Jumana Moon will be sharing ‘tales from the hud hud’ - stories drawn from folktales, poetry and legends from Muslim tradition. From the comedic tales of Nasrudeen, to reflective and mystical stories, we will fly with the hud hud, on a journey to the King.

Jumana Moon is a storyteller with a great love of stories, tales, myths and legends of all kinds and has been collecting stories since childhood. They are, she says 'her favourite things'. She is particularly inspired by stories from her Islamic faith: stories from sacred text, folk tales and stories from the tradition of devotional poetry such as Rumi, Jami' & Nizami.

Also taking us on a journey, with the voice of a lark, will be our wonderful house band, Cage of Crows. And who knows our resident tellers might tell a tale or two.

We are delighted to tell you that soup, cakes, teas coffees etc will be available from our kitchen once more. So now you can leave all your snacks at home. You are still most welcome to bring a bottle of something with you.

We urge you to book in advance as we cannot guarantee there will be tickets available on the door. We would also like to encourage audience members to perform a lateral flow test before attending.

We at Matlock Storytelling Cafe are embracing our quest; to bring top quality performances to adult audiences.

Grab a ticket, turn off your phone and join us on a journey.
Online ticket sales will close at 7pm on the night.

The doors opens at 7.00pm, stories and music 7.30-9.30

Of some Midwinter Magic and Mirth

Or

Sir Cleges and the winter cherries and other tales oft told in medieval times

It was winter and a cruel and hard winter at that. An iron winter, when snow lay upon snow, lay upon snow. Long and unyielding was the darkest of seasons as Mother Winter wrapped herself about the land like a great icy cloak. Her long freezing fingers reaching inside one and all, tickling their ribs and chilling them to the bone. It was a time to gather by the fire in great hall, or alehouse, there rubbing shoulders with noblemen and rough hewn folk alike, partaking of some festive merriment. Enjoying good food and even better company; laughing their aches and ailments away for a while anyway. And now it’s time for you too to draw closer still to those bright beckoning flames, and hear tell of a world weary knight’s gruelling journey. A quest full of stories that took place long, long ago
