Local Businesses Sought For Festive Events That Will Help Make Christmas Less Stressful For Derby families
Independent businesses in Derby are being encouraged to help spread some festive cheer at a series of unique Christmas events being held in the city.
Organised by Sunshine Support, an award-winning not-for-profit organisation that supports parents and professionals of children with special educational needs and disabilities, there will be six events in the run up to the festive season, including wreath making and a ‘Dads-Only’ shopping event.
And for families of youngsters with SEND, there will be a ‘try before you buy’ evening featuring the latest sensory toys, equipment and gadgets.
Chrissa Wadlow, founder of Sunshine Support, which has its headquarters in Spondon, said: “Christmas is a magical time, but also a very stressful time for many, particularly those who have children with special educational needs and disabilities who might find that their senses become overwhelmed and routine disturbed.
“With the cost of living increasing, we wanted to hold an event that championed local businesses at our headquarters in Spondon and offered something a little different.
“We are really excited about the festive events. There will be something for everyone; unique gifts that aren’t available on the High Street, and the events will be held in a Christmassy, relaxed event away from the hustle and bustle of the shops.”
Stall holders who will be showcasing their range of bespoke gifts at the Mum’s Shopping Evening on December 1 - and also the Dad’s-Only event on December 16 - include children’s laser cutting company ‘Little Name Droppers’, who create jigsaws and wooden toys, and Wavey Candles.
The Sensory Shopping Evening will take place at Sunshine Support on November 24, where shoppers can try items such as weighted blankets and fidget toys before they buy.
On December 19, Sunshine Support will host an all-day pampering event where, for just £7.50, visitors can enjoy a facial or get their nails done, while the wreath making workshop – run by Abbie’s Flowers – will run from 11am-1pm on December 5 costing £20 per person.
Finally, for those who want to make their Christmas gifts look extra beautiful under the tree, there will be a Gift Wrapping Workshop with Little Paperie from 12.30pm-2.30pm on December 9.
Chrissa added: “We know how expensive Christmas can be, so Sunshine Support has subsidised the festive events.
“There are still spaces left at the shopping evenings for stall holders, and we’re hoping to have a make-up professional, hairdresser and someone who can maybe do Reiki or massage at the pamper evening.
