International Date For Derby College Student

A student at Derby College has been selected to play for her native Latvian table tennis national team in the world championships in Kuala Lumpur next week.

Diana Rusinova (19) came to the UK from Latvia with her family in 2012 and is studying Travel and Tourism at Derby College’s Roundhouse campus in Pride Park.  She is a member of Draycott and Long Eaton table tennis club and has represented Derbyshire in UK competitions.

Construction and Engineering Skills Addressed by Latest Academy Launch

Derby College has launched the risual Autodesk Academy at the Roundhouse to upskill teachers and students in the latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology software.

IT software and hardware has been installed in a dedicated learning suite at the College to support the study programmes for further education and higher education Professional Construction and Engineering staff and students as well as apprentices and employees at local and regional businesses.

Event Highlights How To Plan For Better Later Life

Family-owned funeral directors G. Wathall & Son Ltd teamed up with Age UK Derby & Derbyshire to organise an event at Derby’s Eagle Centre to encourage local people to take simple steps to make their end of life plans.

Wathalls were on hand with information about pre-payment funeral plans, bereavement support and options available for funerals, cremations and burials. Age UK had a wide range of advice and information about support available to older people.

Former Pupil Returns to Merrill Academy

A former pupil has returned to Merrill Academy in Allenton as part of a team from Barclays Plc who are coaching young people on key employability skills. Dominic Saneria left the school in 2003 and progressed onto Derby College where he studied IT.  He started working life at EGG and now works for Barclaycard in Northampton. He was part of the team who visited Merrill Academy recently to deliver the first stage of the company’s Life Skills programme – devised to support young people into the world of work.

Cook Off Challenge For College Students

Catering and Hospitality students at Derby College and Buxton and Leek College went head to head in a Cook Off challenge held at Derby College’s Engine Shed training restaurant at the Roundhouse, Pride Park.

The students worked in pairs from each College and had two hours to prepare two portions using set ingredients including chicken, potatoes, mushrooms and shallots and then a dessert of their choice.

Public Sessions Organised to ‘Keep Derby Swimming’

Extra public swimming sessions are being held at two Derby pools next week to encourage young people and their families to keep visiting once Moorways Pool shuts next month.
Lonsdale Pool in Mickleover and Gayton Pool in Littleover will be organising extra daytime sessions during half term next week which are usually taken by school swimming groups during term time.

NCS Gears Up For Community Support Programme

Community groups and individuals are being invited to apply for support from young people taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme this summer.

This year just over 1,000 young people will be taking part in a four-week NCS programme over the summer holidays. National Citizen Service (NCS) is a flagship government programme that provides a transformational experience for all 16 and 17 year olds in England and Northern Ireland.

Local bricklayer in training to be the best in the world

A former Construction apprentice at Derby College has won a place in Squad UK for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017. Zack Lysaczenko (21) from Chellaston is now in with the chance of representing the UK construction industry on the world stage after excelling in the finals of the WorldSkills UK skills competitions in Birmingham.
