Talk: John Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis

Have you seen our special talk celebrating John Flamsteed?
This Friday 8th March, 11am-12pm at Derby Museums find out about his trail blazing astronomical observations and drawings.

Flamsteed, (1646-1719), hailed from Derbyshire and was the first Astronomer Royal. In our collection we have an original copy of his Atlas Coelestis based on his observations of the stars.

Its movement was designed by clockmaker, James Harrison of Hull (1792-1875), the great-grand nephew of John (Longitude) Harrison (1693-1776) who famously invented the marine chronometer to calculate longitude at sea.

This year, the exhibition will take place inside The Peel Centre – and just as before, there will be plenty of opportunity for you to get involved with the project.
