Temporary Closure of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery - July Update

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery

Buxton Museum is temporarily closed graphic As you may be aware that the Peak Buildings, which house Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, has been temporarily closed for building structure investigations by Derbyshire County Council’s Property Services. Sadly, we had to cancel the 39th Derbyshire Open Art Competition due to this work.

Although we're temporarily closed, there’s still plenty to do or see even. Our blog is the place to start with hundreds of articles about the collections and virtual exhibitions. There are Make and Take ideas and the education resources will inspire teachers and curious visitors alike. Visit the Wonders of the Peak website to explore our collections and how they fit into the Peak District landscape. And coming soon – a chance to shop online and show your support by donating to the museum.

Statement from our Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis:

“Closing the museum and art gallery was a great disappointment but necessary so that this vital investigation work can be carried out. Until this is done we will not know the extent of the issues and what we are facing with regards to the building.

“However, there is an absolute commitment to supporting the museum and securing the long term future of its collections.

“This will not be easy but we will do all we can to protect this valuable asset which has so many benefits to the local community, residents of Derbyshire and much further afield.”
