Do It Yourself? An intriguing history of DIY opens at Derby Museum

From DIY TV programmes to current trends and ‘hacks’ on social media, this hands-on exhibition showcases DIY through the decades, reflecting the changing attitudes to our homes and encouraging a new generation of DIY-ers. It showcases objects associated with DIY and explores how DIY is changing as we learn more about the importance of sustainability and healthy living spaces and materials.

You’re invited to share your own DIY disasters on our ‘Bodge-ometer’ and make a medal for your home improvement heroes! 

BIG The Musical - be careful what you wish for .. New Mills Art Theatre 11-14 May

Musical based on the famous 1988 film starring Tom Hanks is coming to New Mills Art Theatre. Josh Baskin, a 12-year-old boy, makes a wish into a mysterious ‘Zoltar Speaks’ machine at a carnival. Josh wakes up next morning to find he is no longer a boy but a man! Then, with help from his best friend Billy, he tries to cope with his newfound adulthood, whilst searching for the machine so that he can wish himself back - and more. BIG is a funny, heart-warming musical, a show for all the family. Is being BIG all it’s cracked up to be? If you had one wish, what would it be?

Call out for makers for ‘Assemble: Derby’s Making Festival’

This week Derby Museums have launched our call out for makers for ‘Assemble: Derby’s Making Festival’ returning to the Museum of Making on Saturday 22nd October.  

Produced by Derby Museums, Assemble is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, which aims to celebrate making in all its shapes and forms. Bringing together artists and makers from varied disciplines to share their passion and skills with the public and to encourage others to have a go at making themselves.
