Big Picture Show Online screens 'Misbehaviour'

Film screening
Tickets: £2 per household

March marks Women’s History Month and we’re joining the celebrations by screening Misbehaviour. The true-life story of how the Women’s Liberation Movement disrupted the Miss World competition of 1970. That year it took place in London, broadcast by the BBC and hosted by the US comedian Bob Hope. At that time Miss World was the most-watched TV show in the world with over 100 million viewers.

Arguing that beauty competitions objectify women, two women from the newly formed women's liberation movement (played by Keira Knightley and Jessie Buckley) launched a plan to disrupt the live broadcast of the competition by invading the stage. When the show resumed, the result caused uproar: the winner was not the Swedish favourite but Miss Grenada, the first black woman to be crowned Miss World.

In hours a global audience had seen the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal of beauty subverted.

With female writers, directors, a cast of leading women stars and a long list of female crew, this British comedy drama looks at issues of feminism, race and class while maintaining an element of humour about what was a ridiculous event.
