Local bricklayer in training to be the best in the world

A former Construction apprentice at Derby College has won a place in Squad UK for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017. Zack Lysaczenko (21) from Chellaston is now in with the chance of representing the UK construction industry on the world stage after excelling in the finals of the WorldSkills UK skills competitions in Birmingham.

James Brindley talk

2016 marks the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of James Brindley, who is known as the 'Father of the English Canal System'. He was born in Derbyshire and the Chesterfield Canal was his last.

On Wednesday 2nd March at 7.30 p.m., the Chesterfield Canal Trust is giving an illustrated talk at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield as part of the Brindley 300 celebration. It is entitled James Brindley – his life, his last canal and its unique boats. It will be given by Christine Richardson and John Lower.

HUUB Design Support Greg James Triathlon Challenge

Leading UK triathlon wetsuit, clothing and accessories specialists HUUB Design have supported Radio 1 DJ Greg James and physical activity guru Professor Greg Whyte OBE in their gruelling Sport Relief challenge.

Both will be sporting the latest HUUB Archimedes II wetsuits as well as HUUB triathlon kit which has been designed in Derby by HUUB for their triathlon challenge which will see them undertake a triathlon a day in five different UK cities, starting in Belfast on February 8.

Volunteers Appeal For Derby College’s Broomfield Hall

Derby College is appealing for volunteers to help restore the historic gardens at the Broomfield Hall campus. The restoration programme has been launched by Head Gardener Samantha Harvey who is working with Horticulture students at the College to develop the gardens into a visitor attraction. The gardens were created when the original hall was built in 1873 by industrialist Charles Schwind.

Derby College Students Learn Coaching Skills From Football Maestro

Derby College Sports students recently had the chance to learn coaching and football skills from football legend Roy Keane during a visit to St George’s Park – the FA’s national football training centre in Staffordshire.

The visit was organised by Burton-on-Trent based pharmaceutical company Clinigen Group as part of their partnership with the League Managers’ Association (LMA). Clinigen invited the Sports Coaching and Development Diploma students, based at Derby College’s Broomfield Hall site in Morley, to tour St George’s Park.

Derby College Student Selected for National Squad

A Derby College student has been selected for the England Colleges’ netball squad to compete at an elite level of the sport. Cherese Naylor (17) from Codnor is studying Sports Coaching and Development at the College’s Broomfield Hall campus in Morley. She plays Centre and Wing Attack for the Loughborough Lightning team in the national performance league and, as part of the English Colleges’ team will play against other national sides and in the national super league.

Countdown Begins For Mickleover ‘Great Northern’ Running Event

Entries for this year’s ‘Great Northern’ running event in Mickleover on Sunday 6th March are gathering pace. The 10k and half marathon courses will take place on the country lanes between Mickleover and Hilton and then back to Mickleover Sports Club on Station Road via the disused Great Northern railway line.  Meanwhile the 2k Family Fun Run will focus on the footpath.

Arts@S18 look forward to welcoming you to the Children's Craft Day at the Civic Hall, 10am until 2pm on Wednesday 17th February. Children will be able to try out a variety of crafts from modelling clay to knitting! Bacon sandwiches and refreshments will be on sale. Just £2 per child (there may be a small additional charge for some activities to cover materials)
