Location: Gothic Warehouse (ground floor)

Cost: £7.50 (Limited places, advance booking recommended. Priority booking for members, public booking opens on 26th October)

Sutton Scarsdale estate was bought by the younger Richard Arkwright of Willersley Castle in 1824 for his son Robert, who had married Frances Crawford Kemble of the famous Newcastle acting family. Frances became the centre of a social circle which included the 6th Duke of Devonshire. Paul Halksworth discusses the social life of Robert and Frances, as well as successive inheritors of the estate. The last owner of the Sutton Scarsdale estate, William Arkwright sold it in 1919, the Hall being reduced to a roofless shell. The Hall, saved from total destruction by Sir Osbert Sitwell, is now owned by English Heritage.
