Wathall Staff Bake Off Challenge Raises Funds for Macmillan

Staff at local independent funeral directors G Wathall & Son will be holding their own ‘Bake Off’ competition to crown the star baker at the family-owned firm and then raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Staff across the branches in Derby, Ashbourne and Borrowash will prepare their cakes and biscuits at home and then bring them into the head office in Macklin Street to be tasted and judged by managing director Helen Wathall. Their wares will then take centre stage at Wathall’s branches in Macklin Street and at Nottingham Road, Borrowash, who will both take part in the charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning between 10am and 12 noon on Friday September 30th.

A particular focus for the coffee morning will be the array of gluten free cakes and biscuits to ensure that visitors with allergies can still enjoy a tasty treat. Helen Wathall explained: “Since ‘The Great British Bake-Off’ started on television, there has definitely been a resurgence of cake and bread making amongst the team here. “We thought it was time for us to see just who is a star baker here at Wathalls and I am the perfect impartial judge for this competition as a total lover of cakes but with none of the baking skills! “After the judging, we will be welcoming family, friends, clients and the general public to join us at Macklin Street and Borrowash for The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. “Cancer touches all our lives in one way or another and, as funeral directors, we come into contact with families who have lost a loved one through this cruel disease practically every day. “The practical and emotional support that Macmillan provide to sufferers and their families is fantastic and we obviously wanted to join this initiative to support their work.”
