In May of this year, Vicky McClure, presented the ‘Dementia Choir’ on BBC TV who appeared in concert at Nottingham. It is now widely recognised that singing and music triggers and unlocks memory in the brain of those affected by dementia and this brings associated happiness and an increased sense of well- being.

All of us at some point will be affected by family members and friends who suffer with this progressive condition and know of the significant effects this has on the individual’s life and also their families and carers. Most recently this is likely to have been brought to your attention in the media by the positive effect that singing, and music has on Dame Barbara Windsor who is also affected by dementia and is an Ambassador with her husband for the ‘Alzheimer’s Society’.

Inspired by the ‘Dementia Choir’ and in losing members of its own choir to dementia over the years, the Pye Hill and District Male Voice Choir are to ‘sing out’ for the ‘Dementia Choir’ and will be joined by special guest soloist, Vivien Easom, Mezzo Soprano. All proceeds of the concert will be given to the ‘Dementia Choir’ to assist them with their aims and to help reinforce the positive effects that singing, and music has for those who are affected by dementia.

Please make a date in your diary and come along with family and friends and also support the ‘Dementia Choir’ and enjoy a great evening’s entertainment and fun, including gifted soloists from the choir and the talented guest Mezzo Soprano, Vivien Easom.

The concert will include from the Pye Hill and District Male Voice Choir a wide range of songs to include ‘ Last of the Summer Wine’, ’Sweet Hour of Prayer’, ‘Bring Him Home’, ‘I’m Goin’ Up A Yonder’, ‘Stout-Hearted Men’, ‘Softly as I Leave You’, ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah’, ‘Let All Men Sing’, ‘Mansions of the Lord’, ‘Let There be Music’, Llanfair’, ‘Speed Your Journey’, ‘Morte Criste’, ‘ Some Enchanted Evening’, Gwahoddiad’ and various solos.

Tickets are available from Malcolm Hill – see contact details below, or you can pay on the door subject to availability. Malcolm will reserve tickets if you contact him.

Why not come and join the Pye Hill and District Male Voice Choir and start a new activity? We have recruited three new members in recent months, and they are loving it. It could not be easier; it’s fun, inexpensive and you will make new friends and it will put a smile on your face. Whether you are experienced or a non-experienced singer of any age, you will be made equally welcome and given every assistance. We particularly need bass singers (low voices) and tenors (high voices), but all voices are needed and welcomed.

The choir practice at the Dale Club, Jacksdale, every Monday evening at 7.30 p.m., other than Bank Holiday weeks. Music, practice CD’s, Musical Director, Accompanist and uniform are all provided for a modest membership fee. You have nothing to lose, but a great deal to gain by coming along on a Monday evening and giving it a go!

If you require any further information on joining the choir, concert bookings and arrangements, please ring Malcolm Hill on 07706036946 or 01773 602743, or visit the choirs web site on www.pyehillmvc.co.uk
