It’s very easy to spend a lot of money entertaining the kids over the summer, but there are plenty of fun things to do in and around Derby that are easy on the pocket. Make the most of the summer with these suggestions for all ages.

Follow the interactive Derby Remembers Digital Trail app for smartphone and tablet devices.  It’s free to download and takes city visitors on physical and virtual tour, telling stories involving Derby and its residents during the First World War. Cool the kids down and enjoy family fun at one of the Derby Parks water play areas this summer. Markeaton Park has a paddling pool open every day between 10:30 to 16:30 from 27 May until 4 September 2017. Chaddesden Park has a water play area open from 12 noon to 5pm every day during the summer holidays. Both water play areas are available for free.

Get the kids out of their Batcaves with the Derby Superhero Picnic in the Park events! There will be craft and nature activities, along with 'Try it' sessions, the Derby Homes activity van, face painting, superhero competitions and more. Events are taking place between the hours of 11am and 3pm entry is free at the following parks:

·        Mon 31 July at Markeaton Park

·        Tue 1 August at Darley Park

·        Wed 2 August at Derby Arboretum

·        Thu 3 August at Chaddesden Park

·        Fri 4 August at Sunnydale Park

Come and celebrate all that Osmaston and Sinfin have to offer at the Sinfin Ward Community Fun Day on Saturday 1 July, 12noon to 4pm. Admission is free and there will be activities and stalls to browse.

The Bark in the Park Fun Dog Show at Darley Park on Sunday 17 August is sure to be a winner for all the family. Starting at 12.30pm, fun classes include; most handsome dog, prettiest female dog, waggiest tail, best puppy and many more! All proceeds will go to the Ashbourne Animal Welfare, who will have a stall selling gifts and dog accessories. The event is free to watch and costs £1 per dog for each class in the dog show.

On Sunday 27 August the Friends of Markeaton Park are holding a 1940s themed family festival including craft fair and entertainment at Markeaton Park. Go along and bring history alive at Dig on for Victory! Entry is free and the event runs from 11am to 4pm.

The Mundy play centre has been recently refurbished with new exciting play equipment including a new pirate ship and an adventure hub in the free entry large play areas. There will also be paid activities including a bouncy castle, crazy golf, electric cars and canoes available every weekend, weather dependent. No pre-booking is necessary.
