Old railway training college, Derby Conference Centre, host ‘Women in Rail’ launch event

Derby Conference Centre, the first purpose-built training college for railway staff, has rediscovered its roots and hosted the ‘Women in Rail’ East Midlands launch event.

Women in Rail was created to improve diversity in the UK rail industry through providing networking opportunities and support for all women within the sector.

Launching the Women in Rail East Midlands Group, Derby Conference Centre was the perfect venue to host the occasion. First opened in 1938, the original school could accommodate up to fifty railway operatives and signallers at once. For the following twenty years, the building was used to deliver training for the Royal Engineers and The Railway Engineering School.

Held on Thursday 29th June, the evening sponsored by Bombardier and ATA was a great success. Kristin Thorslund is the Chair of Women in Rail East Midlands.

“Last night was a fantastic example of the energy created when like-minded women come together, with a passion for reinforcing their role in the future of the railway industry.  I am really looking forward to developing and growing Women in Rail.”

The free networking event included complimentary refreshments, and the chance to connect with fellow rail colleagues and indulge in a glass of wine. Guest speakers included Noel Travers, Managing director from Unipart Rail and Public Speaker, Ruth Sacks.

Also present was The Derby Conference Centre’s Sales and Marketing Executive, Rebecca Adams. Rebecca is a key member of the Women in Rail committee and is passionate about encouraging other businesses to adopt diversity as a business strategy.

Upcoming Women in Rail East Midlands events include a workshop in October called ‘First Step to the Next Step’ and a Quiz Night in November.
