Riddle of the Stones

in brief:  A walk for young adventurers. A walk around Middleton discovering some of the Sites of Meaning stones.
activity: Search for clues in the Sites of Meaning stones to solve the riddle of the stones.
for: Families with younger children.
when: Saturday from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, Sunday and Monday 10:00 - 4:00 pm.
walk: 2.5 miles over footpaths and local lanes with 60m ascent. Boots maybe helpful after wet weather.
cost/booking: £2 per child : no booking required


The Story of Sites of Meaning
in brief: A promenade lecture around eight stones with Charles Monkhouse who devised Sites of Meaning.
activity: Children can make a collection of materials to tell their own stories of the walk. Bags provided.
for: Adults and older children.
when: Saturday 27 October and Monday 29 October at 2:00pm.
walk: 5 miles over good paths, local lanes and farm land. 80m ascent. Boots may be helpful after wet weather.
cost/booking: £5 / £3. Includes collection bags for children. First 20 people, priority given to those who have booked.

Other Stones : Other Meanings 1
in brief: In the morning we explore stone in the village and in Bradford Dale that tell the history of Middleton. A local guide will introduce and discuss stones and sites in the area.
for: Adults and older children
when: Sunday 28 October 10:00 am
walk: Morning : 3 miles, 60 metres ascent, over public footpaths and local lanes, good footwear essential.
cost/booking: £4 or £10 for morning and afternoon. First 20 people, priority given to those who have booked.

Other Stones : Other Meanings 2
in brief: Afternoon walk exploring prehistoric Middleton. Recent discoveries in Hardy's Mine will be introduced by members of Derbyshire Caving Club while secrets of Arbor Low will be revealed by a local expert.
for: Adults and older children
when: Sunday 28 October 1:00 pm
walk: Afternoon : 6 miles, 175m ascent, private paths, farm land and local lanes, good footwear essential.
cost/booking: £8 or £10 for morning and afternoon. First 20 people, priority give to those who have booked.

Extra activities for children
During festival hours there will be activities for children in the playground: building towers with bamboo sticks, exploring colour on a large scale and creating collages using material gathered on walks.

Refreshments
During festival hours we will sell a walker’s fare: hot drinks and cakes, soup and rolls, and food for children.
