Local Riders Triumph in Midlands Junior Duathlon

More than 250 young athletes from around the Midlands competed in a Junior Duathlon on a closed circuit at Darley Moor race track in Ashbourne on Saturday.
The event was open to young people aged eight to 16 as part of British Triathlon’s East and West Midlands Junior Race Series. It been organised by HUUB Events in partnership with junior triathlon clubs – Derby’s HUUB Sports Academy and Ashbourne-based Peak Performance.
As well as individual trophies, the times recorded by the young athletes also contributed to the regional scores and the overall trophy went to the East Midlands who scored 1,700 points compared to the West Midlands’ 450 points.
Competitors started with a run before transitioning to a cycle stage and then completing the final run distance.
Several families also took the opportunity to camp overnight free of charge at the race track and then took part in a duathlon for 17-year-olds and over at the venue the following day organised by Crazy Legs Events.
HUUB Events Race Director Claire Duffin explained: “Although we are best known for organising the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon, we are developing a programme of different events both locally and across the UK which appeal to all age groups and abilities.
“It was fantastic to see so many children taking part and enjoying the sport and especially that we had a combination of first timers as well as club athletes.
“We were delighted to be teaming up with the HUUB Sports Academy and with Peak Performance who share our ethos of making sport accessible to all – particularly in the triathlon elements of swim, cycle and run.”
