Local Businesses Support North Derbyshire Challenge Cycle Sportive

Two Pride Park companies have pledged their support for Derby’s next major sporting event.

Geldards solicitors and Document Network Services (DNS) will sponsor the North Derbyshire Challenge cycle sportive on Sunday September 17 organised by Cycle Derby and HUUB Events.

Geldards will sponsor the Team Challenge.  This is an opportunity for up to ten cyclists to work together in an attempt to travel the greater distance.  The company will also host a hospitality area at Markeaton Park with exclusive access for Business Challenge riders throughout the day.

Meanwhile DNS will sponsor the King and Queen of the Mountain challenge which will see a 700m uphill stretch laid with timing chip technology and then the fastest male and female riders winning the title.

Hundreds of cyclists of all ages will set off in stages from Markeaton Park and tackle one of four distances – 40km, 80km, the newly introduced 120km and the 160km.

All routes will initially head out to Carsington Reservoir with the longer distances winding through the Peak District before returning to Markeaton Park.

There are regular food and water stations along all of the routes, supported by Springs Cleaning and High 5 Nutrition.

Mark Smith from Cycle Derby explained: “We first introduced the King and Queen of the Mountain challenge at the Derby Spring Classic Sportive earlier this year. We had such positive feedback from entrants that we have extended it to this event.

“The Geldards team challenge continues to be a popular draw for work colleagues, cycling clubs and friends to take part together.

“As so many of the teams are tackling the longer distances, picking an overall winner has been a challenge in itself.

“The mountain challenge will therefore effectively be a tie breaker for the teams covering equal distances as well as a great measure of their strength and stamina in tackling the climb.”

Claire Duffin from HUUB Events continued: “The Sportive is an important part of the Cycle Derby and HUUB Events’ objective to encourage more people to become active and healthy.

“We are very grateful to Geldards and DNS who are providing families, individuals, clubs and business teams the opportunity to get out on their bikes and enjoy a day of group cycling.”

David Williams, Chairman at Geldards, concluded:  “Cycling is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and Geldards is proud to be supporting an event that will build upon Derby’s ambition to become a cycling city.

“As a proactive member of the Derby business community and a keen cyclist myself, I hope that teams of friends and colleagues will take up the challenge to get on their bikes and crank up some miles.”

The sporting event will raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare, a charity based in North Derbyshire, who provide care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
