Lloyd’s of London Adopt HSG’s Innovative System

The world-famous Lloyd’s building in London’s main financial district is the latest to reap the environmental benefits and cost savings of an innovative washroom water conservation system developed by Derby-based Hygiene Services Group (HSG).

The 14-storey Grade I listed building, is home to the iconic Lloyd’s of London insurance institution with hundreds of people based there.

The Lloyds building is sometimes known as the inside-out building due to its radical Bowellism architecture in which services such as ducts and lifts are located on the exterior to maximise interior space.

Washroom blockages, odours and high water usage have however been an issue and Lloyds’ Corporate Real Estate team called in HSG in a bid to find a solution.

After carrying out a detailed survey, HSG, based in Pride Park, has installed 129 Ureco units and 53 Uretech water managers across the site.

Recognised last year with The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, the Ureco has been designed to reduce the amount of water flushing through washroom urinals to just four flushes per day.

This is done through the unique design of the product and a blend of natural bio enzymes to ‘eat away’ at waste product within the waste pipework. The Ureco also has other filters and a patented ‘odour lock’ system which controls odours within urinal pipework.

Ureco works alongside the Uretech water manager which incorporates many unique features that allow the user to adjust water consumption in urinals based on their business type and usage requirements.

By adopting the Ureco system, Lloyd’s of London now uses 27,429 less litres of water a day which will equate to a reduction of 7.1 million litres of water every year.

This will save the organisation nearly £15,000 a year in utility bills and reduce its annual carbon footprint by 7.5 tonnes of co2.

Ian Arthurs, Technical Services Manager of Corporate Real Estate explained: “I had already seen the benefits of HSG’s Ureco system at another major venue and was keen to replicate the environmental and washroom experience improvements at The Lloyd’s Building.

“Now that we have addressed issues with blockages and odours, the feedback from colleagues and visitors alike has been very positive.

“Washroom water usage has dramatically improved and our environmental credentials have increased.  Furthermore, maintenance call-outs and therefore costs have been cut.”

Lloyds of London join HSG’s impressive customer portfolio including the 02 Arena in London, NEC in Birmingham, major visitor attractions such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach, major restaurant chains such as Pizza Hut as well as in top football clubs and some of the largest retail shopping centres across the country.

HSG Managing Director Simon Rice explained: “Since gaining The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and proudly displaying the emblem on all our products, vans and communications, we have seen a marked increase in sales.

“Our existing and potential customers recognise that The Queen’s Award is the ultimate recognition of quality and innovation and it has elevated the company to yet another level within this competitive industry.

“We are therefore delighted to add the prestigious Lloyds of London building to our customer portfolio and look forward to our continued relationship with the team there through the on-going service contract.”
