Haarlem Artspace launches Go Fund Me campaign to support gallery opening

Haarlem Artspace has launched a Go Fund Me campaign in which will help with the transformation of an 18th Century town assembly room into a stunning new contemporary art gallery in Wirksworth’s Red Lion Hotel.

Scheduled to open later this year, the new Haarlem Artspace Gallery is an exciting partnership with the Red Lion Hotel and The Feather Star Alehouse and aims to showcase the range and quality of contemporary art that is available in non-traditional venues.

The gallery will be an extension of the existing Haarlem Artspace, a not-for-profit gallery and artist studios, which provides dedicated studios and co-working spaces for creative practitioners.

The venue is due to open with ‘Gathering’, an exquisite group show of rural Cornish Artists with evening private view on Friday 26th of November 6-8pm. Director Olivia Punnett selected this opening show, curated by Verity Birt and Jonathan Michael Ray, as it focuses on communal acts of intimacy between people, sites and materials, connecting communities with their rural landscape.

It will be the first of a series of stimulating exhibitions that have been programmed throughout the year, opening to the public on weekends.

The funds raised through the Go Fund Me campaign will be used to buy necessary equipment such as exhibition lighting, UV Blinds, a projector and a PA system.

Commenting on the team’s fundraising efforts Bev Shephard, Co-Director of Haarlem Artspace, said: “We are so delighted to have this amazing opportunity to set up a brand new, ambitious, contemporary art gallery for the local community, in partnership with the Red Lion.

“This new space will be an extension of our Haarlem Mill venue, and as it is a larger gallery space, we'll have scope to bring some incredible artwork of considerable scale to Wirksworth.

“We really want Haarlem Artspace Gallery to be at the heart of our local community and as we become established we'll be running events and classes too, and we'll be able to offer something to the public year-round, as well as at the annual Wirksworth Festival.”

The new gallery will add to the already attractive ale house, boutique hotel and restaurant complex alongside the inimitable Feather Star Ale House, Red Lion Hotel, and restaurant Umami.

It is expected to attract tourists to the area to attend exhibitions taking place throughout the year.

Commenting on the new gallery Olivia Penrose Punnett, artist, curator and founding co-director at Haarlem, said: “Like our Haarlem Artspace creative studios, the new gallery will champion rural contemporary art and is for our local community, as well as visitors from further afield.

“We have an ambitious annual programme planned to encourage a broad audience to find out about our fantastic Haarlem Artspace creative community and visit the stunning historic town of Wirksworth, which sits in a truly inspiring landscape.”
