Free Taster Courses On the Adult Learning Menu In Ilkeston

Derby College Group (DCG) is officially launching its new adult and community venue at The Community College in Pimlico, Ilkeston, with an afternoon of free taster courses on Saturday September 19.

People can arrive from 11am and then a wide range of activities will be available between 12 noon and 4pm to give a taste of the short courses that are now available at the College.

The short sessions will cover a wide range of topics.

There are practical sessions for those looking to then re-train or upskill for leisure such as painting and decorating, brickwork and plastering.

For those looking to return to education either to boost their current job prospects or for a change in career, there are introductory sessions in Care, Mental Health Awareness, Psychology, Sociology, community interpreting and sign language.

Digital skills are essential for work and pleasure and taster sessions at the open day will include touch typing, how to take a perfect selfie, internet safety and social media and selling on eBay.

Meanwhile, creative and leisure taster sessions range from creating cards and invitations to holiday Spanish and poetry for pleasure.

There are also sessions aimed at boosting essential life skills such as self-confidence, managing money and living healthily.

DCG Assistant Principal, Community and Adult learning Jennifer Rehman said: “We are delighted to unveil our new dedicated adult and community learning facilities in Ilkeston which have been designed to create a relaxed and inviting environment for people to enjoy a wide range of programmes.

“Adults come to College for all sorts of reasons – to help them return to or start work, improve their career prospects or to learn a new skill that they can enjoy at home.

“Our Community College in Ilkeston has long been a popular venue for people to study a number of established programmes including Maths and English and Access to Higher Education.

“Feedback from our adult learners is that the quality of teaching, wide-ranging support available and easy access either by public transport or car makes this venue perfect for them to return to education.

“We appreciate that adult learners are often juggling work and family responsibilities and some may find returning to education a daunting prospect.

“Our aim is therefore to make this step as simple as possible for each individual and provide whatever support is required every step of the way.”

Due to Covid-Safe requirements, all attendees must pre-register for the free taster sessions.  Please visit https://www.derby-college.ac.uk/ilkeston-adult-learning
