Festive Family Entertainment In Derby Cathedral Quarter

Lovable children’s character Peppa Pig will make a guest appearance in Derby Cathedral Quarter on Saturday December 7 as part of the Business Improvement District’s packed programme of free festive street entertainment.

Peppa Pig will be making appearances at intervals between 11am and 3pm at 2, The Strand – with families encouraged to bring their camera for the chance of a snap with Peppa Pig.

The Cathedral Quarter BID has also organised a programme of free family-friendly street entertainment every Saturday throughout December.

This will include live music in Iron Gate, the Market Place and The Strand on Saturday November 30 and Saturday December 21 featuring performances by Newhall Brass Band, The Derbyshire Community Male Voice Choir, The Matlock Tuneless Choir, Sing For Your Supper, Rough Truffles Community Choir, Belper Ukulele Group, Drama Inc and vocalists Sara Evans-Bolger and Lucie Lou.

On Saturday December 14 four-piece vocal group QHQ will perform traditional Christmas carols and songs in and around shops and businesses across the Cathedral Quarter.

Meanwhile businesses across the Cathedral Quarter will be decorating their windows in line with the ‘Derby Christmas Past ‘Presents’ and Future’ theme as part of the Window Wonderland competition.

Visitors will be the first in Europe to enjoy the 4m high Christmas ‘presents’ in the Market Place. The presents will burst into a synchronised light and music show every 30 minutes alongside the magnificent Christmas tree which will have its own amazing light show.

Elsewhere in the Cathedral Quarter, Derby Market Hall will unveil its Santa’s Grotto on Saturday December 7 and cultural venues have a variety of films, performances, events, services and exhibitions for all the family to enjoy throughout the festive period.

Martin Langsdale is chair of the Cathedral Quarter Board which drives forward activities under the area’s BID status.

He said: “Christmas is obviously a very special time for families and an important trading period for our businesses.

“We have therefore focused on developing a family-friendly programme of free entertainment to create a vibrant, festive atmosphere in the Cathedral Quarter and encourage visitors to explore all that this very special area has to offer.

“The Peppa Pig appearances will be particularly popular with younger children and we hope that everyone enjoys this special day on December 7.”
