Fabric of the North Exhibition at Cromford Mills

In May, Cromford Mills, of Cromford, near Matlock, will host a stunning exhibition from the British Tapestry Group. Fabric of the North brings together works by over 30 weavers, combining regular, three-dimensional and mixed-media tapestries, large and small, with a single theme: our Northern heritage.

Exhibitors come from near and far, and embody a wide range of experience. At one extreme there are long-established, internationally acclaimed artists who generally work to commission; at the other there are relative novices, including young children. Visitors will discover an art form which can be enjoyed at all levels and by all people, whether working on the loom or simply admiring a work on the wall.

Matlock resident Barbara Scott, one of the BTG organisers, says: “This is going to be an amazing vision of Northern England. It’s not just about looking, there will be opportunities for interaction too, and you might even like to purchase one of the exhibits.” Many of the artworks will be for sale, at prices ranging from £20,000 down to just £65.

Adults and children will be able to take part in weaving a large-scale tapestry, make tiny tapestries and learn ribbon braiding. There will be videos, posters of works by BTG members from around the world, and spinning demonstrations. There will be talks by tapestry experts, and more experienced weavers can join professional workshops. Weaving materials and equipment will be available for sale. As Barbara Scott says, “If you have even a passing interest in weaving, or in the landscape, industry and social history of the North, you should visit us at Cromford Mills.  Here you can learn more about our industrial heritage, see the exhibition, enjoy tea and cake - in fact something for everyone - please join us.”

Fabric of the North runs 6 – 23 May. Entry to the exhibition is free. Talks and professional workshops are ticketed. Details are at www.fabricofthenorth.org.
