Follow in the footsteps of the hundreds of mill workers and explore 18th century village life as you are taken on a journey of discovery around Cromford Village. You’ll visit North Street and see the earliest industrial housing in Derbyshire as well as the state of the art water management system used to power the first cotton mill.

FAMILY FUN: STORYBOOK TALES

Location: Cromford Mills

FREE ENTRY (there is a small charge for some activities)

Enter the wonderful world of books where excitement and adventure await with every turn of the page! See your favourite characters brought to life during this book filled weekend with games, crafts and other fun activities.

Owls and Parrots – Find out more about these fascinating birds throughout the day and enjoy owl and parrot stories in special story time sessions with the birds starting at 12noon and 2pm.

Story Book Games – Fun for all the family.

Craft Workshop – Step into the world of books. Make your own Harry Potter wand and other book related crafts. Drop in anytime between 11am-4pm. £3 per child (accompanying adults free).

Story Book Trail – Find all the books and discover which character is hiding in each. Find them all and win a prize!

Fancy Dress Come dressed as a character from your favourite book and enter the free prize draw!

Children’s Book Swap Stall – Bring along a book you have read and would like to share with other readers and swap it for another book!

Story Book Treats – a special themed menu in Arkwright’s Café including gingerbread men, candied apples, toffee apples, gingerbread house cookies and four and twenty blackbirds’ pies.

This once quiet valley changed forever with the growth of the cotton mills, but have you ever wondered how they brought the cotton here in the first place? Come with us on a journey of discovery about how local travel advanced dramatically over the last 200 years to keep up with industrial demands. Along the way we’ll tell stories about the Arkwright family, the building of the canal and the coming of the railways.

FAMILY FUN: TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE

Location: Cromford Mills

FREE ENTRY (there is a small charge for some activities)

Begin your journey of discovery at Cromford Mills and travel the world in this fun filled weekend for all ages.

Remote Control Car Racing – Race a remote control car around the obstacle course and see how you fare against your competitors. Those with the highest scores at the end of the day win a prize! Suitable for children – and adults of all ages!

Make Your Own Model Rockets – Have a blast at this workshop where you can make and decorate your own space rocket to take home. Drop in anytime between 11am-4pm. £3 per child (accompanying adults free).

Buildings of the World – Collect your map and discover iconic buildings as you travel the world. Find them all and win a prize (£1).

Transport of the Future Gallery – Design your own futuristic transport (draw it or build it) then bring it along to Cromford Mills during the weekend and add it to our Transport of the Future Gallery. Prizes for the winning ones.

Fancy Dress Come dressed as an explorer and enter the free prize draw!

Juicy Bikes – Find out more about Juicy Bike’s electric bicycles that make travelling up hills so much easier! Why not come along and enjoy a test ride!

A WALK DOWN THROUGH THE LUMSDALE VALLEY

Location: Meet at the layby opposite Highfields Upper School car park entrance, Upper Lumsdale, DE4 5NA. Please park in Upper Lumsdale and not at the bottom of the Valley.

Cost: £3 – Limited places, advance booking required on 01629 823256.

A leisurely guided one mile walk down through this wooded gorge of outstanding natural beauty, exploring the stone mill ruins, ponds and waterfalls that make up this unique historical site. Please note the route down the Valley involves some steep steps and uneven paths which can be muddy and slippery. Please wear suitable footwear with a good grip. Walking poles are also recommended.
