Event Highlights Importance of English and Maths in the Workplace

Fourteen businesses and organisations joined an event organised by Derby College Group to reiterate to students the importance of English and maths in the workplace.

Employers from a range of industry sectors including IT, Construction, Rail, Retail and Health and Social Care organised practical activities to highlight how staff use English and maths in their jobs.

The event was held at the Roundhouse Technical and Professional Skills college and attended by students from across the College and local secondary schools.

Ellie Cook from East Midlands Airport said: “As well as highlighting the broad range of career opportunities at the airport, we have set an English challenge to highlight mistakes made in a document to hopefully show the importance of correct spelling and grammar.”

Ignacio Artamend from Aggregate Industries in Hulland Ward added: “Everybody in our company uses maths on a day to day basis so I hope that this event highlights just how important solid maths skills are in the workplace.”

DCG Director of English and Maths Bronagh Quigley concluded: “This has been a very successful event and we are grateful to the College’s work experience team and for the input from employers.

“Many young people think that they will leave English and maths behind when they start a job or apprenticeship but the message that these skills will be a vital part of their careers for the rest of their working lives has come across loud and clear.”
