Derby Museums and Rolls-Royce team up to deliver STEAM workshops for British Science Week

For British Science Week 2023 (10-19 March), school students from across Derby will be exploring the various techniques used in the development of the Trent 1000 engine at the Museum of Making as well as in other parts of Rolls-Royce’s business. Schools have been invited to take part in a series of interactive sessions developed in partnership between Rolls-Royce and Derby Museums.

The Making Futures workshops will take place on Tuesday 14th and 21st March at the Museum of Making, bringing over 250 Key Stage 3 students into the museum to explore The Science of Innovation; a session developed by Rolls-Royce staff and apprentices who work across a number of specialist areas within Rolls-Royce.

During the workshops, students will carry out real-life experiments, based on techniques used in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), Maintenance, the Materials Labs, Machining and Submarines. The sessions will shine a light on the scientific principles, techniques and processes used by a whole spectrum of teams at Rolls-Royce, from designing and manufacturing parts, monitoring and maintaining engines to keep people safe, to exploring ways of powering a future spaceport on Mars.

The students will meet Rolls-Royce apprentices who will give them a unique and exclusive insight into fascinating career options, available right here in Derby, and talk about opportunities for Apprenticeships post-GCSE and Degree Apprenticeships post-A Level.

This is the second year that the Making Futures programme has run at the Museum of Making, following on last year’s sell-out workshops, where secondary school students were introduced to The Science of Safety

Catherine Putz, Derby Museums’ Director of Programmes, said:

“Our partnership with Rolls-Royce continues to grow from strength to strength and, through our Institute of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths), we share the same objectives to build aspirations for the young people of Derby and to positively address the skills gap in the region through inspiring and enabling the creators, makers and innovators of the future.”

“Working together with industry partners ensures the work of our organisation is relevant to our local communities, extending our reach and developing our capacities for mutual benefit. British Science Week 2023 (10-19 March), with its theme this year of ‘Connections’, seems like the perfect time to deliver these workshops as Derby Museums and Rolls-Royce connect once more to promote innovation in STEAM.”

Gill Fennell, Community Investment Manager at Rolls-Royce, said:

“Our partnership with Derby Museums supports our investment in learning and skills development, not only for the students and teachers taking part in these sessions, but also for our own people who really embrace opportunities to inspire young people and stretch their own skills in doing so.

“Our partnership continues to evolve and grow in the space where our separate objectives overlap, so is achieving things neither partner could deliver without the other and, consequently, creating truly unique and innovative learning programmes and experiences.”

The Making Futures workshops will take place on Tuesday 14th March and 21st March for British Science Week 2023 (10-19 March), a ten-day programme of UK-wide events that Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths.

In partnership with Rolls-Royce, Derby Museums plans to deliver similar career-based sessions for schools later in the year with more details to be announced soon.
