Derby College Furry Residents To Star In Nativity Play

A wide range of large and small animals who are cared for by students at Derby College’s Broomfield Hall will take centre stage in a live nativity performance on Sunday December 11.

Alpacas, donkeys, sheep, goats, ferrets, rabbits and even chickens will help tell the nativity story alongside Animal Care learners who will narrate and play the lead characters. The performance will be staged at 12 noon as part of the Animal Care Unit open day at Broomfield Hall.

Other activities during the day will include tours of the animal, reptile and bird enclosures as well as the farmyard with the chance to see the residents there ranging from tarantulas and snakes to a skunk and porcupine.

The animal handling grotto will be open between 10.30am and 11.30am and then 1pm to 2pm and the nearby plant centre, run by Horticulture and Floristry learners, will be selling Christmas trees and wreaths.

Entry to the event is £3 for adults and £1 for children.

Head of Broomfield Eileen Swan explained: “The animal unit open days are always extremely popular with the public who take the opportunity to see a wide range of animals, exotic reptile species and birds up close and learn more about their special care provided by learners here. “The Christmas theme is the perfect opportunity to involve some of our more cooperative residents in telling the nativity story and the learners are thoroughly enjoying planning this special performance.”
