Derby College Employer Academy Programme Expands Into Travel and Events

Derby College has teamed up with the UK’s leading specialist travel and event management company to introduce learners to the broader career opportunities available in the growing industry.

Capita Travel and Events, whose head office is in Wyvern Business Park, works with a wide range of business clients – handling their travel, accommodation and events’ requirements both in the UK and abroad.

The team at Capita will support level three Travel and Tourism learners based at the Roundhouse with expert lectures, special projects and work experience placements over the coming months.

Charlotte Young, Director of Organisation Development at Capital Travel and Events, explained: “We're passionate about supporting and working with local colleges to equip people with the skills, knowledge and insight needed to thrive in the business travel and events industry.

“We are therefore delighted to join with Derby College to launch the Capital Travel and Events Academy.

“As part of their coursework, the Travel and Tourism learners will be completing two week placements with us at our Derby head office.

“This will allow them to get valuable hands on experience and insight into the business travel, meetings and events sector, how it works and the varying careers it can provide.

“During the placements the students will be immersed in all aspects of the business and will be fully integrated members of the office.

“We're also volunteering some of our subject matter experts to be guest lecturers and support the curriculum. We have so much to share with the learners, and as potential newcomers to the industry, we know we can learn from them too."

April Hayhurst, Derby College’s Deputy Principal – Employer and Economic Affairs, continued: “The Travel and Tourism Academy at the Roundhouse operates very high standards.  They have excellent success rates and learners progress into a wide range of careers.

“The input from Capita will now really help to broaden the young people’s horizons and open their eyes to the wider career opportunities available in this growing industry.

“The work placements will particularly help them with their course work and develop their communication skills – showing them the attitudes and behaviour that is required in the workplace which is something that employers tell us that they want to see in their new recruits.

“This is the first Employer Academy which is focused on the travel and events industry and we look forward to further developing the relationship with this prestigious and successful company.”
