Celebrate Derbyshire Archaeology Day in Chesterfield
Two events are set to be held in Chesterfield to encourage local people to learn more about archaeology.
Both events are taking place on Saturday 26 March and give people the opportunity to either get practical by learning to make your own bricks or find out about new conservation and archaeological discoveries over the last year or so, in Derbyshire and the wider Peak District.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to find out more about archaeology. I think there is something here for everyone to enjoy whether you would like to try a practical workshop or visit the Pomegranate Theatre to hear talks from organisations including the University of Sheffield, the University of Leicester Archaeological Services and Wessex Archaeology amongst others.”
You can join Wessex Archaeology to take part in a brick making workshop from 11am to 3pm in an activity tent in Rykneld Square, Chesterfield. This event is free and there is no need to book, you can just drop in on the day.
During the workshop you will be guided through the process of using clay and brick moulds to create your very own handmade bricks. You’ll also be able to find out more about archaeology and a local dig that uncovered brick kilns.
The activity is suitable for adults and children aged eight years and older. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and please note that this activity can be messy.
The brick making activity is weather dependant and therefore subject to cancellation.
The second event taking place at the Pomegranate Theatre from 9.15am is Derbyshire Archaeology Day. Tickets for this event and a programme for the day are now available via the Chesterfield Theatres website.
Attendees will be able to hear a range of speakers at the event discussing themes including successes of the South West Peak Landscape Partnership’s Barns and Buildings and Small Heritage Adoption Projects, Brick making at Onslow Road, Mickleover and the North Lees Estate an update on the Archaeology of a North Derbyshire Valley.
