“I, James, am neither a god nor an angel, but a man like any other...You may be sure that I love the Earl of Buckingham more than anyone else...”

“Cupid and the King” explores the lusty, rancid world of English kings and their “mistresses”, with period readings and music from the Tudors and Stuarts up to the present day.  From the gay lovers of James I to the people’s mistress, Nell Gwynne, be prepared for bawdy, no holds barred, language and adult content in this performance.

The readings are framed by the sublime music of Henry VIII, Josquin and Holborne, with a scattering of X-rated 17th Century catches and rounds.  Mr Simpson’s Little Consort are an established group based in North Buckinghamshire, who have performed at venues such as St John’s Smith Square,  Wycombe Festival, and the NT Claydon House Aylesbury Festival.

They performed to a delightful audience at Eyam last September, and look forward to this return visit north of the Watford Gap!  Follow the links on our website for some lovely live recordings of the amazing Cate McKee, our resident soprano.  Catch us at the URC, Buxton on July 14th,  Spring Bank Arts Centre on July 15th, or with our sister group, The Eisenach Ensemble, at Eyam Parish Church on Sunday afternoon 16th July.
