Bursary Awards For Derby College Students

Two Derby College Art & Design students have won bursaries from Derby Decorative and Fine Arts Society to support their move into Higher Education.

UAL Art Foundation Diploma students Jess Allen and Rebecca Leam have won £400 and £200 respectively after being shortlisted for the annual award.

Jess (19) from Morley impressed the judges with her dress which combines Japanese origami artwork with current fashion inspired by designer Elie Saab. She dyed and hand-folded more than 4,000 paper petals for the piece – representing more than two weeks’ work.

Jess, who came to Derby College from Heanor Gate Science College, has been offered a place at Bournemouth University to study Costume and Theatre Design and her ultimate goal is to work in the film and television industry.

Runner up Rebecca Leam (19) from Swanwick created a textiles exhibit promoting day trips around the UK. She has used printing and detailed needlework to create images of Whitby, Robin Hood Bay and the Lake District.

Rebecca is a former pupil at Swanwick Hall School and is now going onto the University of Derby to study Graphics.

The annual bursary from Derby Decorative and Fine Arts Society was expanded last year to award two prizes. Members of the Society visited the Art & Design Faculty’s end of year show at the Pearson Building in King Street to judge the work of the five shortlisted students.

Derby Decorative and Fine Arts Society’s Young Arts representative Anita Pearson said: “We have awarded a bursary every year for the past 19 years to a Derby College student to support them in their University studies.

“The standards of the students’ work is extremely high every year and we now award two bursaries to make the judges’ lives slightly easier.

“We wish all the finalists the best of luck in their future studies and were particularly impressed with the skill and creativity shown by Jess and Rebecca who have produced some incredible work.”

Jess concluded: “I wanted to come to Derby College after A levels to develop my skills and better prepare me for university life. This bursary is a wonderful way to finish what has been a very enjoyable year at College.”

The Art and Design exhibition opens on Tuesday June 16 with a private viewing and is then open to the public on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am to 4pm at the Pearson Building (next to Smith Cooper, St Helen’s House, in King Street, Derby DE1 3EE
