Broomfield Hall Plant Fest

Derby College’s Broomfield Hall campus in Morley will be open to the public on Sunday April 24 where Horticulture students and lecturers will share their knowledge of how to grow a wide range of plants.

The Plant Fest between 10am and 4pm will be the first in a series of events throughout the year focusing on different aspects of gardening skills. Workshops will be held about Spring pruning and visitors are also being encouraged to bring in samples of plants from their own gardens for the ‘Plant Doctor’ to offer advice on any problems.

A wide range of plants, grown by Horticulture students at the College, will be available for sale at the Plant Centre with a free herb plant for every purchase over £5. And guided walks will be held around the walled gardens and the grounds at Broomfield.

Head of Broomfield Hall Eileen Swan explained: “Having appointed a Head Gardener Samantha Harvey last year, our Horticulture department is reaping some wonderful results to further develop the gardens and grounds at Broomfield Hall and we are keen to share this journey with the general public. “As well as having the opportunity to see the wide range of plants, borders and trees at Broomfield, our students and lecturers will be on hand to share their extensive knowledge and advise on any problems that gardeners are facing. “Plant Fest is part a packed programme of events hosted by the various land-based industries departments at Broomfield Hall from Animal Care to Horticulture. “As well as sharing our fantastic facilities with the public, it also gives our students the opportunity to talk to visitors about what they have learnt and develop their communication skills which are so vital in their future careers.”

In addition to Plant Fest, the Broomfield Hall Plant Centre, managed by David Harris, is open to the public every day except Wednesday.
