BIF 2022 is Almost Here!

The countdown for BIF 2022 has started!  Rehearsals are underway and excitement is mounting!  Violet premiered at Aldeburgh Festival on Friday, garnering 5* reviews.  Its grand finale is in Buxton on the 18th July - will you agree with the critics?

We're thrilled to be bringing you a fantastic programme, filled with spectacular operas, innovative music and opinion-forming discussion - bring on July!

A new English version of Donizetti's Viva la Diva provides the feel-good factor this summer, with a script adapted by renowned screenwriter Kit Hesketh-Harvey, of Kit and the Widow.

Witty and chaotic, the show parodies the heightened emotions and strong personalities of a regional opera company, trying to put on an opera seria in the face of financial struggles, casting disputes and a building sense of crisis.

Following his fantastic performance in the title role of Eugene Onegin, George Humphries returns to Buxton as Agatha, the aging diva and star of the show - will her intervention save the day?

Violet has captured the critics attention after its opening night. The Guardian describes the Music Theatre Wales production as 'tremendously accomplished'; The Telegraph calls it 'fierce and funny, magical and precise'; while The Stage raves about this 'accomplished and fascinating new work'.

The opera centres on a woman who finds freedom as the world falls into chaos around her. In a magic realism-style plot where an hour is lost every day, only Violet can imagine a different future.

Come and see Tom Coult and Alice Birch's great new work at Buxton Opera House on Monday 18 July.

Opening night at BIF will be spectacular with the dark, emotional rags-to-riches story of the famous burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee.

Featuring the most infamous stage mother in the musical canon and running the gamut of showbusiness from child stars to burlesque, Gypsy: A Musical Fable features iconic numbers such as 'Everything's Coming Up Roses' as well as the hugely challenging and emotional 'Rose's Turn' - and in Buxton Joanna Riding will be following in the footsteps of musical theatre giants including Ethel Merman, Patti LuPone and Imelda Staunton, as Rose.

Buy your tickets now, and read our blog post on Gypsy here - then join us on opening night for an unforgettable showbiz extravaganza!
