Bakewell’s 19th International Day of Dance

We are so excited to be holding our 19th Day of Dance which will be held on Saturday 24 June, filling our picturesque town again with music and dance from around the world.

The Day heralds the start of Bakewell Carnival Week, along with the Farmers Market and with local well dressings on show, it is a day out not to miss.  So

join the several thousand people who travel from around the country to enjoy the dancing, colour and fun.

This year up to 30 groups will be displaying dance styles from around the world at six outdoor venues from 11.00am to 4.30pm. Come and watch the displays, then join in and have a go!

You can travel the world with lively upbeat dances from Hollywood shows, American Line Dancing and the more traditional style from the Appalachian Mountains.  We are delighted to welcome back La Tierra Flamenco dancers as well as the very colourful Indian beats, who always put on such a brilliant show. Ballroom and Bollywood will be on offer along with a taste of Salsa from the Rueda Academy.  Rock and Roll will be provided by the fun loving  Hopfrogs Dance School.  Old favourites such as Black Pig Border Morris and Timberline Steve who has drawn in the crowds for years with his precision line dancing group.  To add to the colour of the whole day, traditional British dances will be well represented with plenty of Morris and clog dancing.   New for this year is Hazarah, who will be bringing Folkloric dances from the Middle East. We will also be welcoming for the first time Sean Eireann Dance Academy with some energetic Irish dancing. There will be dance workshops running at the Town Hall.  Confirmed so far are Hazarah and traditional French dance, with Le Vendredi Dance. Local dance team, Well Heeled Appalachian Dancers continue to host this event which draws so many people into the town and gives Bakewell a real buzz for the start their carnival week

Bakewell Day of Dance is very much a community event involving local groups and interests.  There will be opportunities to join in and learn a few basics of the individual dances or you can just relax and enjoy the performances – and it’s all free!  Don’t be put off if it rains as there will be an alternative wet weather programme in the town hall from 12.00 pm.

The whole day will be rounded off in fine style with a ceilidh at Bakewell Town Hall, with music provided by the ever popular Well Dressed Band and their favourite caller John Brown. The international flavour of the day will continue here with a taste of some simple dances from France.  All are welcome to this family friendly ceilidh.  Proceeds of the evening will go to a Bakewell based charity supporting Rwandan people (www.thegobokarwandatrust.co.uk).
