Artcore November Newsletter

Artcore November Newsletter

We are thrilled to say that throughout October we were able to open up Charnwood Street further to accommodate face to face sessions. Sessions such as Playful Changes with Clay and the Rise and Fall Autumn Art sessions ran from the building and visitors were able to interact and take part in person. Spaces have been limited, therefore many of our sessions have included the option to join via Zoom or watch on Facebook live.

Most of us had been working from the office, including some of our new starters. Being back in the office meant that our new team members were able to interact and feel part of the team from the outset! However, we need to once again adapt to working from home, but this won't stop our team building activities with quizzes, bingo and home-recorded activity sessions being planned as we speak!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, our theme for November will be all about Sharing Celebrations with a focus on the various festivals and festivities coming up this month. Lights and fireworks will be a focal point as we take a closer look at things like Diwali and Bonfire Night, so stay tuned for our Festivity Activities. We know that with the lockdown happening things do feel a bit miserable and rather dull but we are using it as an opportunity create a jam-packed, creative online schedule to ensure people have access to a range of positive activities.

We will also be hosting an online festive raffle where people will have the chance to win a variety of festive prizes, including a hamper worth £100!! Everything we raise from the raffle will be put towards making further craft kits, providing material packs and our various workshops.

October was a busy first month for me as I got stuck in to a variety of tasks and meetings from the get go! I have already met and zoomed many great people from within the sector and city and cannot wait to get stuck in even more creating new connections and establishing new collaborations.

Take care everybody, stay safe and stay tuned for this month's offerings!

The Sharing Of Uncertainty - John Newling

It was a pleasure to have John Newling’s exhibition ‘The Sharing of Uncertainty’ at Artcore gallery over the last month with people able to physically visit the gallery with the guidelines to ensure a safe experience for everyone, including one way systems, hand sanitiser stations and reduced capacity.

It was a great response, in spite of the difficult conditions people came from far and wide to see the show.
On behalf of the Artcore team we would like to thank John for sharing his works and experiences and his connections with Nature to and for the people of Derby.

Artist Residency - Present Tense Future Perfect?

Our first in real life residency launched last month with our Artists In Residence, Kelly O'Brien and Thomas Wynne started to work on site. This residency's theme, 'Present Tense, Future Perfect?' is more relevant than ever with the current socio-political climate. While the theme urged artists to respond to ideas of time, history and the subjective nature and retelling of both, the two artists are exploring very interesting avenues of this theme.

Kelly O'Brien is a contemporary visual artist primarily using documentary photography. Her artistic practice draws on both personal and historical narratives, exploring the intersecting relationship to the distortion and fragmentation of truth and memory. The central concerns within O'Brien's practice are themes such as working-class narratives, identity politics, memory, family, and the re-imagined landscape. During the residency, she will work on a continuation of her project ongoing project "Are You There". This work is a photographic and multimedia investigation of memory and truth.

While Thomas Wynne, working in film and analogue photography makes an interesting parallel to the Coronavirus outbreak being recognised in December 2019 and the pandemic journey leading up to the beginning of the residency in September being equal to the time it would take for modern-day astronauts to journey to Mars (9 months). So what is this alien planet that we have found ourselves arriving at? With this residency, he would like to use this concept as a metaphoric seed for the work he hopes to produce.

DONATE

Please donate to Artcore

Times are very uncertain at the moment, but despite having to shut our doors to the public, we are still working hard to reach out to the people who need us the most.
We are delivering packs of art materials and running Stay Connected workshops for people who feel isolated and older people in care homes. We are making online resources for young people and families. We've even been running sessions on Facebook, Zoom and You Tube.

Can you help us to Stay Connected with people through creativity? A small donation to Artcore could make a difference to the well-being of people who really needs a creative boost at the moment.

Help Artcore to spread the joy of creativity! Just £10 would cover the cost of a person being able to participate in one of our courses.

Thank you for your support.
