Army Life Secured For Derby College Group Student

A Protected Services student based at Derby College Group’s Broomfield Hall Land-based and Leisure college in Morley has completed his study programme ahead of time and clinched a place in the Army’s Royal Logistics Corps.

John Stuart (19) from Ironville joined Derby College from Swanwick Hall School with little idea of what he wanted to do as a career.

Three years of specialist tuition at the College, numerous careers talks and visits to the various Armed Forces focused his mind on joining the Army.

His College tutors supported him through the application and assessment process and also encouraged him to increase his fitness at the on-site gym and sports facilities.

John has now started basic training in Winchester before moving onto phase two training for his role as a logistics driver.

He said: “Studying Protected Services and all the careers information and visits that we get have given me the knowledge and skills to better prepare me for applying to join the Army.

“As well as finishing my level three programme and going through the application process, I recognised that I needed to get fit and lose weight and with the help of College and my mum – I have achieved both.

“I am looking forward to completing basic training and then moving into the Royal Logistics Corps.  It’s not only the opportunity to see the world but also to give me skills and experience for life after the Army.”

Protected Services lecturer Chrissie Draper said: “We are all very proud of John who has shown immense determination and dedication to complete the rigorous application process to join the Army.

“He has worked extremely hard to complete the study programme well ahead of schedule and get into the physical shape for Army training.

“We look forward to John returning to College in the future to inspire students to follow their career goals with equal vigour.”
