WE ARE WHAT WE OVERCOME

Concert
Mixing conversational spoken word with a full band performing original songs, We Are What We Overcome will challenge your thinking around the subjects addressed, as well as providing an entertaining evening of upbeat, balladeering music.

The show brings personal stories, weaves them into engaging episodes that are delivered with a comedic edge, and surrounds them with a live set from an accomplished group of musicians. The stories are honest, heartfelt, and focus on mental health – in particular, men’s – and how that affects everyone, both directly, and through the ripples that ensue. The subject matter includes politics and football, but also depression and suicide. It’s a heady mix, handled with care, humour and a passionate approach to making a difference.

The band are: Matt McGuinness (who just happens to be the writer, and speaker), who sings and plays guitar; Eileen Wright, who plays saxophone; Jo May, on percussion; Dan Byrne on bass guitar. Together they are Matt McGuinness and The MLC – delivering a blend of balladeering indie rock n roll, with a hint of Motown

The show includes an opportunity to come along early, to have a chat with the band, or with two great supporters of the project – The Samaritans (www.samaritans.org), and Andy’s Man Club (https://andysmanclub.co.uk/) These fantastic organisations will both have stalls with information and volunteers available, from 90 minutes before the show starts, through the interval, and after the show has ended.

WARNING: Contains talk of mental health, depression, suicide, football, fairy tales, politics, Scouts and other stuff we’re not necessarily supposed to chat, sing or joke about. Feelings can go up as well as down, happiness is subject to status. By the end you may or may not own your own feelings. Possibly not suitable for under 14s. May contain flash saxophone or percussion solos. Standard UK Summer time applies for all shows. Occasionally participants make statements, which is most welcome. Matt may say some things that later turn out to be false or untrue, and may not necessarily reflect what he actually thinks. Offers come and go but we know in the end it’s only ever buy one get one. Terms and conditions apply but who actually reads them anyway.
