Mirror Mirror

Art Exhibition
Derbyshire based artists David William Sampson (Ceramicist), Kirstie Adamson (Collage Artist), Stevie Davies (Glass Artist), Ray Gumbley (Fine Art Photographer) and Kim Fowler (Illustrator) have put together a new exciting art exhibit called ‘Mirror Mirror’ which opens on Sunday 19th February to Sunday 26th February. Inspired by the history of the stunning Gothic Hall, (Elvaston Castle’s hidden gem), the weeklong exhibition showcases the talent of these five local creators.

The Gothic Hall was designed in 1836 as a tribute to the wife to the Fourth Earl of Harrington – Maria Foote. It was named ‘The Hall of the Fair Star’; decorated in rich gold, red and green, it is the height of Gothic glamour and stands ‘as a symbol of the chivalrous pursuit of love’. The artists’ have interpreted this magnificent setting in their own individual way. David William Sampson’s ceramic children and Kirstie Adamson’s collage pieces draw upon the whimsical, other-worldly and fairy-tale atmosphere. Stevie Davies is more directly inspired by the relationship of colour and reflective qualities of materials in the Hall and has depicted this in her ‘Lavish’ glass pieces. Ray Gumbley has honed in on the haunting and ethereal setting in his emotive fine art photography; and Kim Fowler has taken a more literal approach illustrating Maria Foote, in an Art Nouveau style theatre poster, in her debut role (1810) as Juliet in Shakespeare's play about the Star Crossed Lovers.
On Sunday 19th of February there will be an opportunity to meet and chat with all the artists involved about their work in a small opening event from 9am – 4pm. Local musician ‘Desert Ocean’ will also be accompanying the exhibition, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Small items will be available for purchase, along with special limited-edition charity prints (proceeds going to FND Hope UK).

Kim Fowler, main organiser and illustrator, says:
“We are all very honoured to be offered this beautiful setting to showcase our artwork. It is both stunning and inspiring. I cannot wait to see how our work interacts with each other, and also how it will look within the space. We would like the thank Elvaston Castle for this amazing opportunity and are looking forward to sharing our creations with the public. It is going to be a special event.”

The Gothic Hall is situated opposite the Parterre garden and topiary and will be signposted throughout the week. The hall is also available for hiring for private functions and weddings. Please contact Kate.DiveyMatthews@derbyshire.gov.uk for further information.
Doors to the exhibition open daily from 9am – 4pm from Sunday 19th February to Sunday 26th February, Parterre Garden entrance, The Gothic Hall, Elvaston Castle and Country Park, Borrowash Road, Elvaston, Derby, DE72 3EP. Free entry.
