Hidden Strengths

Exhibition
Hidden Strengths is an exhibition of new work created by ARt ChaiRs (Sarah Skinner). Much of Sarah’s work is inspired by the layering, the strong structural materials and the time-consuming processes that are usually hidden away under the top fabric of a reupholstered chair.

Sarah is also interested in the stories that chairs might hold as well as the overt connections between a chair and the human body it supports.

Sarah comments: “I’m looking forward to showing my chairs in an exhibition space where they might be seen as sculptural objects rather than purely functional seating.”

“I love the materials of traditional upholstery and I am probably a little obsessed with upholstery webbing, twisting and looping it, showing it off - there is so much you can do with it and usually it is just hidden away.

I’m a chair enthusiast and will be offering ‘chair surgeries’ during the exhibition period for anybody who wants to bring along, talk about or explore ideas for old chairs!”

Sarah studied Art History at University of Manchester and was a Curator of Fine Art at Manchester Art Gallery, Nottingham Castle and at The Hunterian, Glasgow, roles that have inspired and informed her ideas around upholstery, art and display. She then gained a City and Guilds in Creative Arts: Upholstery, in Ashbourne and continued her studies at Peak Upholstery in Matlock.

Art Chairs has been based at Banks Mill Studios since June 2018 where Sarah is developing her skills and thoughts around upholstery work and evolving into an art practice.

You can come along and meet Sarah on 4 and 11 September from 11am-4pm when she will be hosting her chair surgeries and will be on hand to talk about her exhibition and how her work has evolved over the last three years.

The exhibition will run from 23 August - 17 September and open Mon - Fri 10am -3pm or by appointment and Sat 11am - 4pm

Please note the exhibition is closed over the bank holiday weekend: 28-30 August
