Sinfonia Viva Chief Executive Awarded MBE

The Chief Executive of East Midlands’ professional orchestra Sinfonia Viva, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to arts and culture.

Peter Helps has been at the helm of the Derby-based Orchestra since 1995 – steering it through challenging times.

Over the past 20 years Sinfonia Viva has gained national recognition for high quality classical music in diverse settings from major venues to village halls and for its innovative education and community work.

Luke Evans Bakery rewards loyal customer of more than 70 years with free bread and cakes for life

Derbyshire baker Luke Evans Bakery has rewarded a customer who has been visiting its shop for an amazing 73 years with free bread and cakes for life.

Eileen Hibbert first began buying bread and baked goods from the bakery in Greenhill Lane, Riddings, at the age of nine when she moved into a house just a few yards away with her parents.

Now 82, she’s still living in the same house, still buying her bread and cakes from the bakery, and has never bought loaves from anywhere else.

Last year’s Spirit of The Fringe winner returns and it’s bigger and better than ever. Extensively re worked after last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Brain Rinse is a madcap, bizarre comedy one-man sketch show with a cast of thousands. Performer Mike Raffone performs in this ultimate immersive show, which contains traces of audience participation – starring him, directed by you. There’s war, mountaineering, a sex cult where the members are not allowed to touch each other, and a spiritual journey to discover one’s ‘inner ninja’.

Organist hopes dream will rise from the ashes

A national prize for her contribution to music means organist Zorada Temmingh has one big ambition left: to play the organ in Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral when it is restored after this year’s devastating fire.

Zorada, who brings her ground-breaking performance inspired by the Cathedral to Buxton International Festival in July, received the Andrew Murray Federation of Afrikaans Culture (FAK) last week for her contribution to sacred music.
