Opera features obsession Hollywood had to leave out

Buxton International Festival’s new opera about the life of the fifth Duchess of Devonshire will tackle an obsession which the Hollywood film version of her life barely touched.

Keira Knightley, who starred in 2008’s The Duchess, had hoped the film would be able to include the drama of Georgiana Cavendish’s gambling addiction and the massive debts she ran up at the gaming tables of Georgian high society which she scandalised and fascinated in equal measure.

Success of Somercotes Salvation Army Annual Plant Fair and Coffee Morning

On Saturday 11th May, Somercotes Salvation Army, held its Annual Plant Fair and Coffee Morning, which was very well attended and greatly enjoyed.

This was the sixth year the Plant Fair has taken place and raised a record £800.00, with all profits from the sale, as last year, benefitting Anidasofie (House of Hope), Kokomlemle, Accra, Ghana, where Captain Vicky Owen was previously based for six years before moving to Somercotes.

'SACRIFICE' – THE UNVEILING

ON THE EVE OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME ANNIVERSARY

 

          After three years of fundraising Andy Mayer's sculpture / memorial 'Sacrifice' will be unveiled at 1:30pm on 30 June in Belper's Memorial Gardens.

          On the 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle Of The Somme, fourteen men from Belper died, almost all within the first thirty minutes as machine gun fire cut them down as they left the trenches.        

Derby Festé Returns

Family-friendly Derby Festé has been a key feature in the Derby festivals calendar for the past 13 years and returns to the city streets this on Friday September 27 and Saturday September 28.

 

Festé attracts more than 30,000 visitors to the city centre over the two-day festival which features performers from across Europe in a celebration of street entertainment including dance, contemporary circus, music and comedy.
