University in running for top award

Bondholder the University of Derby has been shortlisted for the sector’s most prestigious accolade – the Times Higher Education (THE) University of the Year Award 2019.

The THE Awards are widely acknowledged as the ‘Oscars of the higher education sector’ and recognise outstanding work and exceptional performance across 23 award categories, with the University of the Year Award being the most sought after.

DERBYSHIRE VOLUNTARY ACTION GRANTS - deadline 6 September

Healthy Bolsover Grants Scheme -  Open to community and voluntary groups, Parish Councils and statutory organisations operating in the Bolsover District.  Local businesses are also eligible to apply if community health benefits can be clearly demonstrated.

Chesterfield Health & Wellbeing Partnership Small Grants Scheme - Open to voluntary / community groups or even a group of local people within the Chesterfield Borough Council area, who come together to support the health and wellbeing of their community.

QUEER AND GENDER DIVERSE GROUP – 25 September

A Queer & Gender Diverse group is being set up in Belper and warmly invites you all to join on Wednesday 25th September at Fleet Arts (the venue is fully accessible, there is a gender neutral loo and one is also wheelchair accessible).

Double delight as Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire wins two Great Taste Awards

Popular Derbyshire farm shop Croots has been awarded two new Great Taste Awards to add to the impressive selection of accolades collected over the past 11 years.

Great Taste Awards are regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the fine food world – and Croots Farm Shop has now won at least 25.

The latest Great Taste Awards were awarded to Croots Bakewell Tart and Croots Shire Ale, which each received a One Star Great Taste Award - meaning the judges dubbed them as products that deliver fantastic flavour.

Spice World Movie Night at Iconic Roundhouse

Following the huge success of its inaugural events, The Roundhouse Events team based at the historic Roundhouse, Pride Park, are celebrating the reunion of British girl band the Spice Girls with a showing of Spice World the movie.

The beautiful Roundhouse will be turned into an indoor cinema on Saturday 19 October for a one-off showing of ‘Spice World’.

A team member at Wathall’s - Derby’s longest established independent funeral directors -has qualified as a Mental Health First Aider to support colleagues across the company’s branches in Derby city centre, Ashbourne, Alvaston, Burton and Borrowash.

Fay Bloor is Wathall’s Bereavement Support Coordinator – leading the company’s  Dandelions bereavement support groups in Derby and Ashbourne and the Grief Journey programmes which are held free of charge throughout the year to help those who have lost a loved one come to terms with their loss.

Derby Festé Invites Local Communities To Be Part of Launch Evening

Derby Festé: Friday 27 and Saturday 28 September 2019

Local people are being invited to be part of a special community performance on the opening evening of this September’s Derby Festé – highlighting the festival’s theme of ‘Space, Moon and Tides’.

A community workshop will be held at Déda in Chapel Street on Saturday September 7 between 1pm and 2.30pm.

Leader Succession at Sinfonia Viva

Celebrated violinist Benedict Holland has retired after 17 years as Leader of Grammy-nominated Sinfonia Viva - the East Midlands’ professional orchestra.

Mr Holland now plans to pursue other professional opportunities and has been succeeded in the role by award-winning violinist Sophie Rosa.

He said: “I am sad to be leaving behind a wonderful team of musicians and colleagues at Sinfonia Viva but looking forward to having the time to develop other aspects of my performing and teaching career.

Derby Festé Promises a Feast of Street Entertainment

Derby city centre – Saturday 28 September 2019

Derby city centre will take on a Covent Garden-style atmosphere again this September with a packed day of family-friendly street entertainment.

Derby Festé, which will return to the city on Friday September 27 and Saturday September 28, attracts more than 30,000 visitors to the city centre over the two-day festival which features performers from across Europe in a celebration of street entertainment including dance, contemporary circus, music and comedy.
