He has been looking so glum because of such troubling matters as Brexit, austerity, Donald Trump, cheese strings, Isis, tax avoiders and the inexplicable popularity of nail bars. You can’t really blame him for feeling down about any of those subjects, can you?

Seven of the Best from Derbyshire Recognised in Prestigious Awards

Seven Derbyshire businesses have reached the finals of the Rural Business Awards – the UK’s only dedicated national business awards for the rural community, run in partnership with the CLA and actively supported by the countryside sector as well as MPs across the UK. The Rural Business Awards are sponsored by Janine Edwards Wealth Management Ltd, Principal Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management.

Dog Grooming Success For Local Apprentice

Derby College Dog Grooming apprentice Jessica Peggs (21) has scooped a top award in her first national competition.

Jessica, from Eastwood, is a former Derby College student and is now completing a level three apprenticeship at the College’s dog grooming salon at Broomfield Hall in Morley.

She entered Premier Groom at Stoneleigh, which also went towards the practical element of her International Certified Master Grooming qualification, and came away with first prize in the intermediate class.

Derby College Reaches Final Shortlist for IMI Industry Award

Derby College has been shortlisted for a national award by the motor vehicle repair industry body in recognition of its work to train young people and support local businesses.

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has this week announced the finalists for its prestigious Outstanding Achievers national award and Derby College is one of three training centres in the UK to make the shortlist.


Following its successful Buxton Fringe exhibition enjoyed by over 60 visitors, Burbage Art Group is preparing for its autumn season and hoping to attract new members.

The classes run in school terms starting on Wednesday September 7th at the Burbage Institute, Nursery Lane, Buxton from 7.15pm to 9.15pm. Organiser Rachel Slaney explains: “There is no formal course - people tend to bring their own projects and materials - but September is a great time to start when everything feels new and people are rested and inspired from their summer holidays.”

Free Seminars Focus On Bereavement Support

Derby and Ashbourne independent funeral directors G Wathall & Son are holding two free seminars to help people cope with bereavement and also to share best practice with professionals on supporting people who have lost a loved one. The daytime seminars will be held on Monday September 26 at the Grange Banqueting Suite in Littleover.
