Three Is The Magic Number

It is often said that good things come in threes, and this is definitely true at StraightCurves, a small business based in the heart of Chesterfield delivering arts and crafts education to all ages: 2016 has seen their 3rd Birthday, a Chesterfield Retail Awards win (third time lucky!) and now they have three sewing tutors, including a Great British Sewing Bee Semi-Finalist!

With the current trend to get back to crafting and sewing increasing, one tutor was simply not enough to cover demand, so Karen, their existing sewing tutor and StraightCurves owner, has been joined by not one but two new tutors. Sara Laverick, who used to teach at Chesterfield College, started teaching at StraightCurves in early 2016 and her courses are proving very popular in both dressmaking and pattern cutting.

August sees Tracey Symonds, a semi-finalist in The Great British Sewing Bee 2016, joining the team to increase the variety and frequency of sewing workshops. Tracey’s first course starts on August 8th and covers making pyjamas, with her first workshop running later in the summer making pattern weights. Tracey says “Although I prefer using long flower pins on cotton fabric, for slippery and tricky fabrics, pattern weights are a must!”

Between the three tutors they have all bases covered! Tracey is a trained primary school teacher and loves making clothes, whereas Karen, trained in architecture and design before retraining as a secondary school teacher, loves to work with colour, shapes and patterns. Sara is a pattern cutting expert and is passionate about adapting patterns to make garments fit and is trained to teach at FE level. With the new additions, there really is a sewing course or workshop for everybody at StraightCurves!

StraightCurves is based in their fully-accessible studio building at 104 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NE. For more information about courses and workshops at StraightCurves please contact them directly on 01246 807575 or check out the website www.straightcurves.co.uk.
