Tapton Lock Celebration Event 17th & 18th Sept 2016

Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service and Junction Arts, supported by Arts Council England, Chesterfield Borough Council and local businesses, have hosted successful weekends of activities at Tapton Lock Visitor Centre on the Chesterfield Canal, over the last 3 years.

In 2013 we had Jo Bell, the Canal Poet Laureate working with visitors to create crowd sourced poetry. Last year we had Cathy Grindrod, the Derbyshire Poet Laureate. This year we have live music from Chesterfield Folk Club in the marquee, arts and crafts demonstrations and workshops, as well as countryside related activities.

This year’s event is included in our Countryside Events booklet with 50,000 copies distributed across the county and we are planning a marketing and social media campaign to advertise this year’s event widely. We have funding from Derbyshire County Council and are currently looking at other grant funding opportunities so we can host a dynamic weekend packed with activities for the whole community at Tapton Lock and along the Chesterfield Canal.

We would like to invite you to join us this year on 17th and 18th September. There will be lots happening, the activities will be varied to appeal to a wide range of interests and will be designed to engage with all ages and abilities. They will include arts activities delivered by Junction Arts, performances by the very popular Chesterfield Folk Club, have a go canoeing and wall climbing, boat trips and environmental and outdoor activities. Leading up to the event we are planning to deliver outreach workshops to children from local schools to create work to exhibit over the weekend and to support our aim of involving more people in the arts and to raise awareness of this beautiful area and the local environment.
