Summer Entertainment in the Cathedral Quarter

Visitors to Derby’s Cathedral Quarter will be treated to a host of entertainment this August with a wide range of free events.

The popular CQ Saturdays programme continues with Street Circus, in partnership with Déda Producing, on August 8 with regular performances at the Waterfall in the Market Place between 11am and 3pm.

On August 15, CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious returns to the Waterfall stage with a host of music, comedy and dance between 11am and 3pm. CQ Saturdays Handcrafted at the Cathedral Quarter will also be held under the Guildhall arches and in the Market Place between 10am and 4pm – featuring the best of the region’s artisan producers.

On August 22 CQ Saturdays Street Theatre will feature actors from Ashrow Theatre bringing Edwardian splendour to Cathedral Quarter streets from 11am to 3pm and engaging visitors with adapted extracts from their popular show ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.

Every Thursday, renowned local historian Richard Felix will take visitors on a guided 45-minute lunchtime walk of the Cathedral Quarter from 12 noon. Tickets cost £6 which includes a voucher for the Cathedral Coffee Shop in Iron Gate and are available on the day from the Cathedral Quarter Rangers on duty in the area.

Meanwhile Derby by the Sea, presented by Derby LIVE and Sight Support Derbyshire, and supported by the Cathedral Quarter, continues until Sunday August 2. Relax at the Market Place beach with an ice cream whilst children enjoy the entertainment, a ride on the funfair, inflatables and seaside stalls.

Martin Langsdale, chair of the Cathedral Quarter Management Group, which drives forward activities under the area’s Business Improvement District status, explained: “CQ Saturdays has grown in popularity and we have many visitors who come into the Cathedral Quarter especially to see the entertainment which is organised by the BID and our arts partners.

“The entertainment is designed to create a vibrant, Covent Garden-style atmosphere in the area which people can sit back and enjoy and then explore the area whether they want to go shopping, have lunch or visit the many cultural venues.”
